Job description

Who We Are

Vanderwell is an Alberta, family-owned company operating in northern Alberta for more than 80 years. We have a modern sawmill, planer mill, and pellet mill facilities, which produce dimensional lumber, wood pellets, shavings, and chips for wholesale customers.

We’re a major employer in the local region, we have more than 150 employees working throughout the operation -- mill production, sales & shipping, woodlands, truck and mobile equipment shops, and administration. Contract and part-time employees are also employed in maintenance, transportation, and seasonal activities.

The Opportunity

We are currently looking to hire a Sawmill and Kiln Forklift Operator for our manufacturing facilities near Slave Lake, Alberta. Job duties include:

  • Operating a Taylor Forklift and/ or a CAT 966 Forklift Wheel Loader
  • Moving rough lumber from sawmill outfeed to kiln carts.
  • Changing dry kiln charges.
  • Moving dried lumber from kiln carts to yard stockpiles.
  • Performing routine maintenance on forklifts and loaders.
  • Adhere to Vanderwell’s written safety, maintenance, and inspection programs

Working Conditions:

  • Exposed to vehicular traffic, noise, vibration, moving machinery, weather extremes, slipping and tripping hazards
  • Lifting heavy, awkward objects and climbing on equipment may be required
  • Required use of PPE appropriate for the task and working conditions

Must have:

  • Two (2) years experience running equipment, preferably larger forklifts and loaders or heavy equipment.
  • A solid work ethic, be eager to learn, and be a team player.
  • Excellent situational awareness.
  • Ability to manage time and plan ahead to constructively manage workflow in a high paced production environment.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • A valid class 5 driver's license is required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Experience with lumber kilns is considered an asset.
