Job description

The School of Arts & Technology at Selkirk College is seeking a full-time Electric Bass Instructor to join our Contemporary Music & Technology faculty to teach in person at our Tenth Street Campus in Nelson, BC. Our innovative diploma program is based on the world-renowned Berklee College of Music curriculum. It includes individual instruction on voice, guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, violin, and keyboards, as well as a solid grounding in music theory, ear training, and music technology. The successful candidate will have a record of active performance, participation in the music industry, and a commitment to student success. All instructors teach a range of courses across the core program curriculum and share Selkirk College’s student-centred values and mission to “inspire generations of changemakers through relevant, inventive and sustainable education.”

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The curriculum is based on the most relevant and up-to-date music industry standards, with an emphasis on developing practical skills. The successful candidate will:

  • Teach private bass lessons, bass labs, and student ensembles, and provide classroom instruction in a range of courses such as music theory, arranging, ear training, composition, film scoring, business of music and music history.
  • Develop and deliver teaching strategies and assessments that meet course learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback.
  • Develop online resources as needed using the college’s learning management system.
  • Contribute to curriculum development to ensure alignment with industry trends, best practices, and innovation.
  • Prepare students to follow their own stylistic interests.
  • Attend department meetings, student recitals, and community performances.
  • Maintain student records, grades, and course outlines while adhering to institutional standards and expectations for professional practice.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the School Chair

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Professional experience as an electric bassist. Proficiency on acoustic bass is an asset.
  • Ability to teach across all aspects of the program curriculum.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success, recruitment, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the field from historical, aesthetic, and practical realms.
  • Improvisation skill.
  • Sight-reading skill.
  • A broad musical background that includes contemporary styles of music, including Rock, Pop, Jazz, and R&B.
  • Ability to relate with a diversity of students from multiple cultural backgrounds.
  • In-depth understanding of Pro Tools is an asset.
  • Knowledge of music notation software and music technology is an asset.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be a team player and collaborator.

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Music (Master’s preferred).
  • A minimum of three years’ experience performing professionally.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience teaching in formal instruction. Teaching at the post-secondary level is an asset.

This is a regular, full-time (100%) position, commencing August 1, 2026. Salary and Benefits are in accordance with the SCFA Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,709.12 - $4,341.23 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience. Preference will be given to SCFA members who are on layoff status and eligible for recall, as outlined in Articles 5.6 and 5.9 of the SCFA Collective Agreement.
