Job description

As our Custodian, you'll play an important role in keeping our workplace clean, safe, organized, and ready for the people who work here every day.

Working across our offices, production areas, warehouse, and shared spaces, you'll take ownership of daily cleaning, sanitation, waste management, and general facility upkeep. You'll also help maintain supplies, support company events, and identify facility concerns that need attention.

We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, pays attention to the details, and can manage their responsibilities independently. You'll be part of our Facilities team, working alongside others across the organization to maintain a welcoming, professional environment where our team members can do their best work.

WHY THIS ROLE, WHY NOW

At Smartrend Manufacturing Group (SMG), we design, engineer, and manufacture technology that solves real-world transportation challenges, and we're growing fast.

Over the past five years, that growth has enabled significant investment in our people, our capabilities, and our automotive systems business. These investments include a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, which we will move into in May 2027, along with enhanced R&D equipment, tooling, technology, and infrastructure that strengthen our engineering capabilities and accelerate product innovation.

We're building more here – more capability, more technology, and more opportunity. And we're looking for people who want to work in a collaborative and fun environment to fuel our next wave of innovation.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Maintain clean, sanitary, and safe conditions across SMG offices, washrooms, lunchrooms, production and warehouse areas, and other shared spaces.
  • Perform daily and scheduled deep cleaning, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, disinfecting surfaces, and maintaining washrooms and high-touch areas.
  • Monitor and replenish cleaning and facility supplies, maintain inventory levels, and communicate replenishment needs.
  • Operate, inspect, clean, and properly store custodial equipment, tools, and cleaning materials.
  • Collect and dispose of garbage, recycling, and general facility waste, keeping collection and disposal areas clean and organized.
  • Assist with meeting and company event setup, cleaning, and cleanup, while maintaining assigned walkways and common areas.
  • Identify and promptly report maintenance concerns, including spills, leaks, damaged fixtures, pest activity, and potential safety hazards.
  • Follow established safety procedures, including PPE, WHMIS, and SDS requirements, while coordinating with Facilities, Operations, Purchasing, EHS, and other teams as needed.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, with at least two years of experience in custodial, janitorial, commercial cleaning, or a similar environment.
  • The ability to work independently, manage assigned priorities, and maintain consistent cleaning standards with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining clean, organized, and well-kept facilities.
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to promptly report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and supply needs.
  • Knowledge of safe cleaning practices, including proper handling of cleaning products, WHMIS, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • The physical ability to bend, crouch, lift at least 25 lbs, and stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Comfort working safely across office, production, warehouse, and outdoor environments while adapting to varying cleaning requirements.
  • A valid Manitoba Class 5 driver's licence and the ability to travel between SMG facilities as required.

PAY, BENEFITS AND TIME

  • Competitive salary aligned with market rates, reviewed as you grow.
  • A $500 Health Spending Account each year to support what you and your family need.
  • An enhanced health benefits plan, with vision and dental coverage and generous annual maximums for paramedical services.
  • A company retirement contribution match of 3% between a DPSP and RRSP account.
  • Generous vacation time to recharge, reset, and make room for the things that matter.
  • Flex time when you need a little extra room for appointments, school pickups, or when life throws you a curveball.
  • Company-sponsored training and/or certifications to support your professional development.
  • Access to confidential 24/7 Employee Assistance Program (EAP) support when life gets challenging.
