Leadership Role | Growing Construction Firm

About the Role

A rapidly growing General Contracting (GC) company in British Columbia is seeking a Senior Controller to lead financial operations and drive strategic decision-making across the organization.

This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, project-driven construction environment and wants to play a key part in shaping the company s financial infrastructure.

The Senior Controller will oversee full-cycle accounting, job cost management, WIP reporting, cash flow oversight, financial controls, and team leadership, while working closely with project managers, operations, and executive leadership to ensure accuracy, profitability, and financial discipline across all projects.

Key Responsibilities 1. Financial Leadership & Reporting
  • Lead and oversee all full-cycle accounting activities, including general ledger, AP/AR, payroll integration, and month-end/year-end close.

  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements to senior leadership.

  • Ensure accurate percentage-of-completion accounting, WIP (Work in Progress) reporting, and margin analysis.

  • Manage external audit and tax compliance processes in alignment with Canadian accounting standards.

2. Construction & Project Accounting
  • Partner closely with project managers to monitor project budgets, cost-to-complete, forecasts, risk exposures, and profitability.

  • Review job cost reports, progress billings, change orders, subcontractor commitments, and cost variances.

  • Ensure compliance with British Columbia lien legislation, statutory holdbacks, and construction contract requirements.

  • Strengthen the connection between project operations and financial reporting.

3. Cash Flow & Risk Management
  • Oversee cash flow planning, treasury oversight, and credit/collections policies.

  • Manage subcontractor payment processes, lien holdbacks, and release documentation.

  • Identify financial risks early and recommend corrective actions to maintain strong cash flow health.

4. Systems, Controls & Process Improvement
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.

  • Lead improvements in ERP/accounting system usage, reporting tools, Excel-based financial models, and automated workflows.

  • Evaluate current financial processes and implement best-in-class practices suitable for a growing GC.

5. Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team.

  • Collaborate with operations, estimating, and executive leadership to ensure financial accuracy and project accountability.

  • Act as a strategic partner to the VP of Finance and senior management team.

Required Qualifications
  • CPA designation (Canada) required (legacy CMA considered an asset).

  • 8 10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience.

  • Strong background in construction accounting, preferably in general contracting or project-based environments.

  • Proven expertise in:

    • job cost accounting

    • WIP & cost-to-complete analysis

    • progress billings & holdbacks

    • margin forecasting

  • Advanced Excel skills (complex formulas, modeling, dashboards).

  • Strong understanding of Canadian accounting standards.

Preferred Experience
  • Experience with construction-focused ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Viewpoint Spectrum, Sage 300, Jonas, Procore integrations).

  • Knowledge of BC construction regulations, lien laws, and construction contract structures.

  • Experience scaling or modernizing finance teams during company growth.

  • Ability to implement systems, redesign workflows, and automate reporting processes.

Key Competencies
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong attention to detail paired with big-picture thinking.

  • Confident communicator, able to collaborate and influence across departments.

  • Proactive, hands-on leadership style not afraid to roll up sleeves.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, project-driven, high-growth environment.

What s Offered
  • Competitive compensation and benefits.

  • Opportunity to lead the finance function for a growing GC with a strong reputation.

  • High visibility role with direct impact on financial strategy and operational performance.
