Sedgman is seeking a mechanical engineer for its Montreal, QC office. This person will be responsible for a variety of tasks, ranging from engineering design and equipment selection to on-site support and quality control. The candidate will participate in all project phases, from proposal preparation and studies to detailed design, construction, and commissioning, with prior site experience to ensure on-site engineering functions are efficiently completed and compliant with technical requirements to support construction activities. On site, the role involves ensuring safe, on-time, within-budget project delivery that meets design requirements.
What does this role involve? Main Responsibilities
Provide technical direction and guidance to project staff to ensure goals and objectives are achieved effectively and economically.
Monitor design compliance, identify potential or actual non-conformances, and document for resolution.
Manage materials and consumables, ensuring construction personnel are supported to achieve project objectives.
Complete on-site engineering functions, including risk assessment, quality observations, RFIs and technical queries, construction planning with staff and subcontractors.
Work on mining and industrial process improvements, plant layouts, equipment selections and integration, pumping and piping of fluids and slurries, and material handling.
Participate in all project phases including scoping, proposals, feasibility, detailed design, construction support, commissioning, field engineering, and business development.
Prepare and review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior engineers and technical staff using engineering calculations and simulations.
Support procurement, construction, and site activities including package development, vendor coordination, and bid reviews.
Build and maintain strong client relationships and contribute to business development.
Promote a strong safety culture and adhere to company policies and procedures.
Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
Continue professional development and maintain high discipline, knowledge, and awareness.
Work safely at all times.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
5–7 years of relevant work experience.
Registered with OIQ (P.Eng in Quebec).
Previous experience on a mine or construction site is required.
Strong skills in MS Office, MS Project or Primavera P6 are highly desired.
Contract administration exposure is an asset.
Ability to safely and effectively manage time, priorities, and activities.
Relevant mechanical engineering experience, preferably in mining or related sectors.
Familiarity with engineering analysis software.
Experience with industrial plant layout, pumping and piping systems, conveyors, HVAC, and material handling equipment.
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Must be eligible to work in Canada without sponsorship.
Language requirements : bilingual in French and capable of intermediate English conversations with non-French-speaking colleagues and clients.
