JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Director, Emergency Services, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) will work as a RN in the Extended Class RN (EC). The NP will provide leadership and promote excellence patient /family centered nursing care through expert clinical practice, education, consultation and research. The NP is responsible to: Provide direct patient care, coordination of care, discharge planning and the coordination of related community and other resources for the emergency patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and practice settings; initiate, participate and / or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interprofessional teams. The NP will work in partnership with consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

*Based in the Emergency program, the NP will function with a high level of autonomy and expert skill in the management of ED patients.
*Utilizes a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and advanced level of clinical competence in caring for patients.
*Collects and interprets data about the health of the patient to determine a medical diagnosis and treat complex responses of individuals and families to actual or potential problems.
*Conducts in depth comprehensive assessments of patients that integrate a wide range of complex information.
*Initiates and evaluates selected medical and nursing therapies within the NP scope of practice, medical directives and practice guidelines.
*Collaborates with the physician when determining an acute or chronic diagnosis as appropriate.
*Consults with and refers to other health care professionals and community services as needed.
*Provides formal and informal education to internal and external teams/partners
*Participates in program evaluation and reporting requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Current RN (EC) registration with the Ontario College of Nurses, with a Nurse Practitioner certificate in Acute Care or Primary Care;
* Masters of Nursing required;
* Member of the RNAO and the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario;
* Minimum Two (2) years recent Nurse Practitioner or advanced clinical experience in Emergency Department or equivalent high-acuity, unscheduled care setting (e.g., urgent care, critical care, acute medicine) required.
* Successful completion of College of Nurses approved education to prescribe controlled substances required.
* Emergency Nursing Certification (ENC) strongly preferred; candidates without ENC must demonstrate equivalent emergency clinical expertise
* Demonstrated competency in rapid assessment, triage principles, and management of undifferentiated patients across the lifespan required
* Experience managing high patient volumes, competing priorities, and time-sensitive clinical decision making in a fast-paced environment required
* Proven ability to initiate diagnostics and treatment for common emergency presentations (e.g., chest pain, sepsis, trauma, mental health crises) required
* Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner
* Ability to produce high quality work while meeting deadlines
* Ability to work autonomously within the NP scope while collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary teams in a high-acuity Emergency Department required
* Demonstrate initiative and good judgment with the ability to multi-task

* Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
* Patient centered service orientation with sensitivity to and appreciation for diversity
* Excellent decision making and problem solving skills
* Program planning and evaluation methodology skills required
