Job description

Candidates must reside in the GTA area to be considered for this role as they will be required to be in the office approximately 3 days a week at the Toronto Corporate Office (located in downtown Toronto).

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on lawyer with strong business acumen, capable of working independently and collaboratively with multi-stakeholder teams and external partners. The successful candidate will provide legal advice on a broad range of corporate and commercial matters to help mitigate legal and regulatory risk and support the company’s strategic initiatives. The Associate General Counsel is expected to demonstrate sharp analytical skills, excellent legal and business judgment and directly collaborate with stakeholders to devise creative solutions.

The Associate General Counsel will be assigned to the Greater Toronto Area with a hybrid set up.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance to various business units within the company on a range of issues, including new product launches, regulatory compliance and contracts.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contracts and agreements.
  • Represent the company in legal proceedings and manage litigation, as necessary.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis on various legal issues affecting the business and summarize findings.
  • Effectively manage and oversee the work of outside counsel to ensure cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A law degree from a Canadian law school
  • Membership in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • At least 8 years of combined, relevant experience at law firms or in-house legal departments, with deep and practical knowledge and expertise in banking or financial services
  • Familiarity with technology product launches and legal aspects of product development, translating legal advice into actionable guidance for teams
  • Expertise in drafting, negotiating, and managing contracts with a proactive, flexible, and team-oriented attitude
  • Advanced ability to quickly assess legal risks, evaluate and solve problems, prioritize multiple high-profile projects, and maintain a diligent, organized, and professional demeanor under pressure, while balancing legal risk mitigation against key business objectives and risks
  • A positive attitude and strong integrity, ethics, and judgment, with advanced project management skills and a team player, hands-on approach to cross-departmental coordination
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Additional Information

The company is committed to accommodating applicants with disabilities up to the point of undue hardship during the recruitment, assessment, and selection process. If you are selected for an interview, please notify the company if you require accommodation in respect of the materials or procedures used at any time during this process.
