Job Title: Project Engineer
Job Description
This role provides dedicated technical support to a piping fabrication facility serving the nuclear industry. You will work closely with the Project Manager and General Manager to resolve technical issues, develop and maintain technical specifications, and ensure that fabrication activities meet stringent regulatory, quality, and documentation requirements. The position offers the opportunity to help lead a nuclear fabrication facility within a highly regulated, safety-focused environment.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary technical support resource for the piping fabrication facility, working closely with the Project Manager and General Manager to address technical issues that arise during fabrication activities.
- Develop and prepare detailed technical specifications that clearly define project scope, functional requirements, applicable codes and standards, schedules, and deliverables through the creation of technical specifications aligned with project objectives.
- Create, implement, and maintain procedures and work instructions to support effective document control, fabrication processes, and inspection activities.
- Provide engineering input into project risk assessments by identifying potential technical challenges and developing mitigation strategies to support successful project execution.
- Support proposal development, cost estimates, and RFQ responses by contributing technical insight and evaluating engineering scope and requirements.
- Review customer specifications and design documentation to ensure alignment with contract requirements, project expectations, and applicable codes and standards.
- Identify and assess engineering risk factors, including first-of-a-kind (FOAK) elements, performance guarantees, and other technical uncertainties that may influence execution strategy, oversight requirements, or project cost.
- Support the selection and application of appropriate Quality Assurance programs for procured materials and equipment, ensuring compliance with nuclear and other relevant regulatory requirements.
- Contribute to constructability reviews to ensure designs are practical, efficient, and aligned with the project’s execution strategies and fabrication capabilities.
- Participate in design reviews and progress evaluations, integrating value engineering principles and constructability considerations into final engineering deliverables.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, quality, procurement, and construction, to ensure constructability requirements are effectively incorporated into design outputs.
- Facilitate the resolution of complex engineering and fabrication issues, including non-conformance reports (NCRs) and corrective action requests (CARs), ensuring timely and compliant resolutions.
- Review and, where required, approve dispositions for NCRs, field-initiated changes (FICs), and related items that may impact cost, schedule, or constructability, coordinating closely with design partners.
- Support project management in evaluating and processing change requests, including technical assessment and approval of scope changes.
- Review and approve work packages to ensure compliance with design requirements, project specifications, and applicable codes and standards.
- Provide oversight on redline drawings and support the coordination and completion of final as-built documentation for fabrication projects.
- Support the preparation, review, and approval of project close-out documentation, including final as-built drawings and turnover packages, to ensure successful project delivery and client satisfaction.
Essential Skills
- 10+ years of experience in fabrication or manufacturing leadership, preferably within highly regulated environments.
- Strong experience in nuclear manufacturing or in similarly regulated industries such as aerospace, military or defense, heavy industrial, or automotive.
- Proven experience managing budgets, cost controls, and operational performance in a fabrication or manufacturing context.
- Strong understanding of quality standards, technical documentation, and compliance-driven production environments.
- Project Engineering designation or equivalent engineering qualification relevant to fabrication or manufacturing.
- Understanding of welding fundamentals or experience in welding engineering, including familiarity with welding processes and their application in fabrication.
- Experience in program management or project management within fabrication, construction, or manufacturing settings.
- Knowledge of construction practices and how they interact with engineering design and fabrication processes.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements in nuclear or other highly regulated industries, including adherence to strict quality and documentation standards.
- Ability to interpret and apply technical specifications, codes, and standards to fabrication and construction activities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess technical risks, resolve non-conformances, and support value engineering.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to work with cross-functional teams and external design partners.
