Job description

Do work that matters

Bankwest has a rich heritage. We’re proud to be part of the fabric of Western Australia with a strong culture built on local support. We’ve always been innovative, evolving over time to look after a growing regional market and seeking out new customers. With the support of a strong partner in CBA, we share a belief in the value of our brand, our potential for growth and a big aspirational Vision.

This is no ordinary Software Engineering function. We're building tomorrow’s bank today, which means we need creative and diverse engineers to help us redefine what customers expect from a bank. Envisioning new technologies that are still waiting to be invented and reimagining products that support our customers and help build Australia’s future economy.

See yourself in our team

Bankwest's Technology Division develops and executes all technical change within the organisation ensuring the leverage of technology to deliver the Bankwest strategy. The division works on a wide variety of technologies and projects with the support of a dedicated team in an Agile methodology. Our team is responsible for the world-leading application of technology and operations across every aspect of the bank - from product platforms for our customers, to essential tools within our business.

You’ll be part of Customer Trust and Security crew who is responsible to protect customers money and data by delivering secure, resilient banking experiences. They build trust through payment fraud and scam prevention, privacy controls, and transparent tools that help customers transact safely and confidently.

As a Staff Engineer, you will lead the development of cloud-native, event-driven, and microservices-based architectures. This role involves both hands-on engineering and technical leadership, including mentoring others and shaping architectural decisions, as well as promoting AI-assisted development practices within engineering teams. Also, you’ll be involved in all aspects of the delivery from solution design and development to production rollout.

We’re interested in hearing from people who:

  • Possesses full-cycle engineering experience: ideation, technical design, build, testing (unit, integration, system), release, and ongoing maintenance.

  • Actively embraces and integrates AI-driven solutions (including LLMs and agentic AI approaches) to enhance our engineering workflows and product capabilities.

  • Collaborates with peers and helps grow capabilities within the squad and across the crew.

  • Are passionate about learning new tools and technologies and are constantly thinking outside the box.

  • Leads design and delivery of event streaming and microservices using AWS.

  • Provides technical leadership on system design, performance, and security patterns.

  • Works closely with architects and product owners to deliver scalable, customer-first solutions.

  • Champions AI-assisted tools for code generation, API documentation, testing, and security.

Tech Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these will set you up for success in this team:

  • Programming: C# or Python

  • Frontend: React, Angular or similar

  • AWS Cloud: Lambda, Step Functions, API Gateway, DynamoDB, RDS, ElastiCache, CloudWatch

  • Event Streaming: Kafka/MSK consumer/producer patterns, SQS/SNS queuing and notifications

  • APIs: RESTful API design & management, OAuth/JWT for authentication & authorisation

  • Databases: DynamoDB, RDS, schema optimisation

  • Documentation: OpenAPI/Swagger for API specifications

  • Familiar with DevSecOps practices and tooling - GitHub Actions, SonarQube, Jira, Snyk, AppDynamics, Confluence, Cucumber, ServiceNow

  • Any experience with the following would be great - AI build tools/assistant (Roo Code, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cline), Testing Automation (AI-generated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests)

Working with us:

Whether you’re passionate about customer service, driven by data, or called by creativity, a career with us is for you.

We support our people with the flexibility to balance where work is done with at least half their time each month connecting in office. We also have many other flexible working options available including changing start and finish times, part-time arrangements and job share to name a few.

Our people bring their diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives to build a respectful, inclusive, and flexible workplace with flexible work locations. We’re looking for people who truly live our values: Care, Courage and Commitment and we’ll offer you great opportunities to develop your career with us.
