Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly environment within municipal buildings and facilities. This involves performing routine cleaning, minor maintenance tasks, and ensuring that all areas are presentable for staff, visitors, and the public. The Custodian supports the day-to-day operations of municipal spaces by contributing to health, safety, and cleanliness standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform general cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing surfaces.
- Empty trash receptacles, recycling bins, and ensure proper disposal of waste materials.
- Clean and sanitize washrooms, restock supplies, and maintain hygiene standards.
- Conduct minor maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, unclogging drains, reporting larger maintenance issues when necessary.
- Set up and take down furniture and equipment for meetings, events, and activities as required.
- Ensure entrances, hallways, and common areas are clean, safe, and accessible.
- Monitor cleaning supplies and equipment, reporting the need for restocking or repairs.
- Respond promptly to spills, accidents, or emergency cleaning situations.
- Follow all health and safety guidelines, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment and properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Support special cleaning projects such as floor waxing, carpet cleaning, and window washing as needed.

Education & Certifications
- Valid Ontario class “G” driver’s license, with access to a reliable vehicle.
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of experience in custodial, janitorial, or building maintenance roles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Cleaning Expertise: Knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and materials used for maintaining large facilities.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to identify areas needing cleaning or maintenance to ensure high standards.
- Health & Safety Awareness: Understanding of safe work practices and chemical handling procedures.
- Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and manage workload efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to identify minor maintenance issues and take appropriate corrective actions.
- Physical Stamina: Capability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, bending, standing for long periods, and operating cleaning equipment.
- Communication: Ability to convey information clearly and effectively to tenants and members of the public with diplomacy and respect.
- Technical Aptitude: Capable of learning and utilizing electronic systems to manage and track work assignments.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors around facility grounds.
- Standard business hours, Monday-Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work for emergency and planned maintenance activities.
- Cognitive demands include sustaining focus and attention over long periods, often while performing repetitive tasks in varied environments.
- Physical demands include lifting, carrying, standing for extended periods, and exposure to cleaning chemicals.
