Introduction
BCMEA represents approximately 49 waterfront employers and, by extension, the more than 9,400 people who work for them. BCMEA’s customer-members are ship owners and agents, stevedores, container, bulk, break bulk and cruise ship terminal operators. We help optimize our members’ operations by providing our expertise in labour relations, safety & training, and recruitment of the waterfront workforce.
Overview
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Safety, the Senior Advisor, Industry Claims will lead strategic improvements across multiple employers and third-party claims contractors. The role requires deep technical knowledge of claims and vocational rehabilitation, combined with strong collaboration skills. We are seeking a proactive safety professional with proven experience in claims management and return-to-work (RTW) programs.
This position is suited to someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment, excels at meeting deadlines, and brings a hands‑on, solutions‑oriented mindset to safety and claims initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a consistent, industry-wide approach to claims management that promotes collaboration and alignment among employers and third‑party contractors.
- Identify and assess successful approaches to claims management within the industry and integrate them into standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Develop and maintain comprehensive SOPs for the usage of third‑party experts to ensure all contractors operate in alignment with industry standards and expectations.
- Maintain regular communication with terminal claims representatives as well as third‑party contractors to stay informed about ongoing claims, particularly those that are complex or require special attention or appeal.
- Provide oversight and strategic guidance for claims where the BCMEA acts as the injury employer, ensuring effective management and resolution.
- Work collaboratively with contractors and employer representatives to strengthen and harmonize RTW programs across the industry.
- Leverage best practices to promote early and safe return to work.
- Explore and implement innovative approaches to providing meaningful modified work for injured workers, ensuring safe and efficient reintegration.
- Oversee vocational rehabilitation initiatives across the industry, supporting workers in training for alternative or transitional roles where appropriate.
- Lead the creation and maintenance of an industry-wide JDA database to support RTW planning and consistent claims practices.
- Chair and lead a working group that meets regularly to review complex claims, evaluate RTW program effectiveness, and ensure vocational rehab options are being fully utilized.
- Proactively jump in to assist with other industry safety initiatives and programs as they arise.
- Act as a collaborative member of the greater safety team, contributing to overall safety strategy, program development, and continuous improvement efforts across the organization.
