Assistant Professor in Gender, Power, and Religions in “the Americas”

The Departments of Religious Studies and of Gender Studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador are seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level focusing on gender, power, and religions in “the Americas,” commencing July 1, 2024.

Job Description :

This call specifically invites candidates whose research and writing reflect on contemporary issues related to gender in “the Americas,” focusing on at least one of the following (not in order of priority) :

• gender, race, and religion;
• religion and colonialism;
• decolonial, anticolonial, and / or Indigenous religions and spiritualities.

Applicants should clearly articulate in their cover letter how their research and teaching fit into the position’s focus on Gender, Power, and Religions in “the Americas,” and situate themselves within the subcategories outlined above. They should also present a teaching portfolio demonstrating the ability to teach introductory and senior / graduate level courses in the Study of Religion and Gender Studies, including courses in method and theory. The successful candidate must be able to supervise honours and MA students in their research and will have the opportunity to expand course offerings in the Departments of Religious Studies and Gender Studies. Their appointment would be 60% in Religious Studies and 40% in Gender Studies.

At the time of appointment, candidates will have completed a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field and have demonstrated competence in method and theory in the study of religious and / or spiritual traditions. ABD candidates will be considered with reasonable assurance of completion before the commencement of the appointment on July 1, 2024.
