Faculty Chairs lead the faculty within their subject area in all matters relating to the academic program at the Upper School. Faculty Chairs ensure that the College's Vision, Mission and Values are fostered through curriculum and pedagogical leadership and the development and management of faculty helping to build an exceptional continuum of learning and teaching across the Prep and Upper Schools. This job posting is for an existing vacancy.Key Responsibilities and Tasks Teacher ResponsibilitiesAcademic Prepare and implement course objectives, lesson plans, outlines and assessment pieces for course of study following IB and College guideline; Employ best practices for teaching students at the high school level, including inquiry and problem-based learning, scaffolding, book-ending, frequent review and feedback, and differentiated instruction; Create an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere in the classroom; Establish a positive and aspiring classroom and / or rehearsal environment that best enables a diverse group of students to flourish, and recognizes the differing needs of students on the basis of their linguistic, historical, cultural and socio-economic experiences; Communicate regularly on student progress with faculty, administrators and parents; Use technology in the classroom and delivering remote learning to enhance learning and support student organization and planning; Collaboratively create engaging assessments to evaluate students' progress, and provide meaningful feedback to students, in their journey towards continuous growth; Keep up to date with developments in subject area, teaching resources and strategies and make relevant changes to instructional plans and activities; Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, assemblies and various professional development opportunities. Advising Actively engage with students in their advising group in order to know them and support their growth in academics, co-curricular and social emotional wellbeing; Know the academic, physical and personal profiles of each advisee; student in the advising group; Emulate the values of the College-Learning, Community, Wellbeing, Service and Pluralism; Be an effective link between the school and families on both academic and non-academic matters by carrying out Adviser duties. Meet with advisees during advising sessions and deliver the advising curriculum; Write advising comments on reports and communicate formally and informally with parents of advisees in person, email and via telephone. Co-Curricular Lead with skill, passion and enthusiasm, identified activities in our vast co-curricular program, including athletics (coaching expertise in basketball, soccer, hockey, volleyball, baseball), the arts, clubs and publications; Actively participate in the life of the school including, but not limited to graduation, school dances and other extracurricular community events as required. Faculty Chair Responsibilities Help to establish a culture of teamwork, collaboration, mutual respect, and a fundamental belief in our Vision and Mission : With the Head of Upper School, provide leadership in moving the Upper School towards its future direction. Maintain and communicate core standards and expectations, programs, code of conduct, shared ideals, routines, and policies of the Upper School (and assist in the development and review of policies and procedures relevant to the Upper School and the College as required). Be present and visible in the Upper School, and act as a role model for the community. Forge and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with all employees. Provide curriculum and pedagogical leadership in support of excellence in learning and teaching, working in collaboration with the Head of Upper School, Director of Academics, MYP Coordinator, DP Coordinator and the Wernham West Centre for Learning : Lead faculty in delivery of the MYP and DP, ensuring requirements of the IB and the expectations of the Ontario Ministry of Education are met. Ensure documented curriculum plans, moderation of assessment tasks and shared pedagogical approaches. Support the ongoing development and implementation of the Year 10 NBE3U : Understanding Contemporary First Nations, Metis and Inuit Voices course. Foster excellence in learning and teaching and a culture of collaboration by leading regular department meetings, facilitating the sharing of best practices and enabling peer-to-peer classroom observations. Re-evaluate the curriculum on an ongoing basis to ensure it upholds the standards of the IB and Ontario Ministry of Education, and upholds the principles of international-mindedness, pluralism and social justice. Support the development of inquiry-based learning and design thinking as pedagogical tools. Further develop the IB Approaches to Teaching and Learning and Learner Profile across the department. Provide input into the school-based professional learning program and the development of academic policies and processes in support of excellence in learning and teaching and the realization of the school's Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions. Collaborate in the evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of program delivery through data collection and analysis in support of improvement across the school. Support a strong continuum of learning and teaching for Year 6 to Year 12, working in collaboration with Prep School Subject Coordinators to develop a coherent and cohesive scope and sequence of learning through MYP and DP, including the topics, concepts and skills to be learned, and organizing regular full (Prep-Upper) department meetings to develop the scope and sequence, assessment procedures, pedagogical norms and essential agreements grounded in the College's values. Support delivery of the mandates of the Wernham West Centre for Learning. Ensure the school's policies and processes are followed within the department. Lead the delivery of all employee related processes and programs in the department : Foster a culture of care, growth, collaboration, innovation and excellence. Provide leadership to the department including hiring (with the Head of Upper School), training and development, assessing performance, determining mentoring and coaching needs, assigning and evaluating work and providing constructive feedback. Lead the Faculty Growth and Evaluation (FGE) process for all department members by modeling a culture of continuous learning and growth. Ensure employee wellbeing, health & safety, change management, employee engagement and diversity & inclusions priorities are delivered. Complete other administrative responsibilities : Work with the MYP and DP Coordinators and Registrar to ensure that unit plans, course outlines, and key subject resources (e.g. textbooks, equipment, technological resources, etc.) and exam arrangements are reviewed and updated annually. Work with Faculty Chairs from other departments to build and coordinate the horizontal curriculum. Work with the Head of Upper School and Director of Academics to create the faculty teaching schedule. Work with the DP Coordinator to ensure the appropriate allocation of supervision for the Extended Essay. Ensure the quality of report cards from the department by proofreading comments. Develop and administer a goals-based departmental budget to ensure that the department has all the required resources to deliver the programs. Communicate the program at student and parent information sessions, support the Office of Admission and participate in committee work as required. Job Requirements Experience, Knowledge and Competencies : Strong grasp of the development and curricular needs of Upper School students; Demonstrated ability to incorporate technology into learning and teaching; Knowledge of pedagogy in order to provide coaching to faculty in their subject discipline; Knowledge of pedagogical tools designed to enhance the learning experience (e.g. inquiry-based learning and design thinking); Strong ability to communicate effectively to inspire and motivate others; Ability to build positive working relationships with employees, students and parents; Ability to effectively engage in challenging conversations or difficult conversations with students, employees, parents and other colleagues within the college; Ability to lead, coach and develop Upper faculty within designated subject area to support the implementation of the strategic initiatives; Ability to successfully implement programs, initiatives and projects at Upper School that supports the strategic direction of the College; Ability to analyze data and information to determine valid conclusions and recommendations; Ability to organize people to achieve goals by setting goals and providing clear direction; Ability to identify and address concerns of employees; Ability to assess individual employee's performance, determine mentoring needs and support constructive improvement; Relevant Bachelor degree, a B.Ed or equivalent and at least five years of teaching experience within the subject specialty; Master's degree an asset; Experience as an MYP / DP examiner or workshop leader is an asset.
