Canadian Shield and Shining Waters Regional Council is looking for an Accounting Assistant / Bookkeeper. This is a permanent full-time position at 35 hours / week
Within the United Church, the Regional Council, as part of the wider United Church of Canada, is a decision-making body responsible to serve and support communities of faith within its bounds and provide necessary oversight.
The Canadian Shield Regional Council (CSRC) and Shining Waters Regional (SWRC) are composed of all ministry personnel within its geographic bounds, ministers of denominations within mutual recognition agreements while under appointment or call, and lay members elected by the communities of faith, respecting the balance of lay and ministry personnel where possible. They support congregations and communities of faith, and numerous other ministries including camps, youth and young adult work, leadership development and new ministry initiatives. They focus on providing services that assist church personnel and maintain good relationships between congregations and personnel. They also provide staff, finances, advice, advocacy, and program resources to ministries to enhance their work, and support the work of General Council.
The Accounting Assistant / Bookkeeper will support the Regional Staff Lead, Shining Waters as an integral part of the staff team supporting Canadian Shield and Shining Waters Regional Councils, providing accurate, concise and effective financial transaction recording and reporting. The Accounting Assistant / Bookkeeper will be responsible for Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and other accounting and administrative duties as assigned.
The main areas of focus will be :
- Accounts Payable : Verify and enter invoices in accounting system for payments; Check accuracy of reimbursement expenses; Prepare weekly EFT payments, wire transfers and / or cheque runs; Perform monthly credit card reconciliations; Respond to vendor inquiries and reconcile vendor accounts.
- Accounts Receivable : Enter payments received in accounting system weekly by recording cash, cheques, pre-authorized remittance, and credit card transactions; Generate invoices, account statements, reports and donation tax receipts
- Accounting Administrative Support : File accounting documents; Assist in the preparation of financial statements, variance analysis, and audit working papers / support documentation; Perform month-end closings; Balance subledger accounts to reconcile accounts, including bank reconciliation; Manage grant applications process in Shining Waters Regional Council and other administrative functions.

Working Conditions :
The United Church of Canada has adopted a hybrid workplace model and thus providing flexibility for this position. The incumbent will work from both a home office and from the Regional Council Office located in Guthrie (Barrie) Ontario. The incumbent will be provided, for work purposes, use of secure devices and must be available by email, phone, teams or zoom during regular office hours Monday to Friday. Sitting and viewing a computer screen for long periods, keyboarding / using assistive devices or technologies, intermittent physical activity including sitting, standing and being on a call for long periods of time will be required. Occasional additional hours may be required.

Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $45,259 to $51,582 with the ability to progress to a maximum of $60,344. This is based on category 3 on our salary range. Placement on the salary range will be based on factors such as market condition, internal equity, candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role. Pension and group benefit plans coverage and annual vacation round out this compensation package.
