Health & Safety Specialist

The Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment for Aviva Canada employees by leading the day-to-day activities of the National Health and Safety Management System (HSMS).
This individual will provide operational guidance and support to leaders and employees at assigned locations (e.g. Eastern / Western Canada offices) while also managing elements of overall program.
This role will also play a meaningful role in the implementation and maintenance of the Health and Safety Management Tool (EcoOnline).

What you'll do :
Lead incident investigations and determine the action plans to address any gaps.
Lead Post incident review, determining root causes and contributing factors to an incident and making recommendations for prevention and continuous improvement.
Investigate H&S hazards, recommend controls and supervise the remediation of the hazards.
Working with business partners conduct the performance of safety risk assessments.
Lead Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) activities.
Support the office ergonomics program including conducting assessments and making recommendations to mitigate ergonomic risks.
Develop, coordinate, schedule, deliver, track & maintain training programs related to H+S (including First Aid, safety committees and E-Learning).
Works with leaders to ensure fire safety controls are effective including recruitment and training of fire wardens.
Support the workplace inspection process for all Aviva Canada locations.
Maintain evidence of H&S program compliance.
Independently conducts audits and reports as needed for the HSMS
Report, maintain and analyze metrics for leading and lagging H&S indicators.
Responsible for the annual review and update process for the written safety programs, policies procedures.
Develop policies, procedures and guidelines based on regulation and business requirements.
Provide mentorship both written and verbal to leaders and employees to support a safe working environment and health and safety risk.
Ongoing engagement across the business to ensure Aviva offices and staff are proactively engaged in the programs and processes that prevent accidents and injuries.
What you'll bring :
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Occupational H&S Certificate
First Aid Training
CRSP or CHSC designation is an asset
First Aid Training
A demonstrated ability (3-5 years minimum) in a H&S role or equivalent experience
Tech skills including MS Office Suite
Health and Safety Management System Experience (Applications) would be an asset
Project Management experience would be an asset
Knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation across Canada
Strong interpersonal and collaborator influencing skills
Report Writing
Can work under their own initiative, refer upwards where appropriate.
Ability to independently manage multiple, conflicting priorities and deliver a quality result within tight timelines
Bilingual (English / French) would be an asset
