Job Description

Reporting to the Director, Occupational Health and Wellness, the Manager, Spiritual Care will play an essential role in the management and coordination of the Mackenzie Health Spiritual Care Program, overseeing spiritual and religious counseling services and psycho-spiritual support services while providing a world class patient experience to patients, families and staff.

The Spiritual Care team is multi-faceted, including Spiritual Care Practitioners, community faith partners, volunteers, and psycho-spiritual students, and work collaboratively with patient care, wellness, and other stakeholders to optimize services organization wide and all locations.

The Manager, Spiritual Care will support a model of shared accountability for the patient experience and further solidify Mackenzie Health as a workplace of distinction for the spiritual care team, volunteers, and students.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Develop and implement a best practice and innovative spiritual care program that recognizes the diversity of the community and is consistent with Mackenzie Health’s strategic plan, vision and values.
  • Provide care that is respectful of religious, spiritual, and cultural diversity by supporting ethical discussion and difficult decision-making by patients, families, and staff.
  • Develop and implement a sustainable Psycho-Spiritual Care Student Program for Mackenzie Health under the standards of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC / ACSS).
  • Design, implement and manage a program of SPE based on educational principles appropriate to experiential learning and that integrates the CASC / ACSS core competencies.
  • Assess and engage individual SPE students such that the student’s clinical learning, personal awareness, reflection on spiritual / religious theories, and professional competency is furthered, and optimal integration can occur.
  • Provide direction, supervision and support to the Spiritual Care team and volunteers.
  • Provide direct patient and family support as required.
  • Act as Hospital Liaison with Community Faith Partners.
  • Lead annual and ad hoc spiritual celebrations and events.
  • Support education opportunities for research and quality improvement in Spiritual Care.
  • As part of the multidiscipline health care team, provide guidance and subject matter expertise to a variety of organizational committees and teams.
  • Participate in the professional development of staff and volunteers with respect to spiritual and religious issues.
  • Assist in the preparation and leading of Sacred Services within the Spiritual Care Program.

Education / Certifications / Licenses :

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree in Spiritual Care or Spiritually Oriented Clinical Counselling or Psycho-Spiritual Therapy Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner or Certified Psycho-Spiritual Therapist with demonstrated supervisory competence in the field of Supervised Pastoral Education (SPE) and able to conduct SPE programs in keeping with the standards of CASC / ACSS.
  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)
  • Certified Supervisor-Educator by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care.
  • Endorsement by a religious faith group to function as a spiritual and religious care provider.

Experience / Skills / Abilities :

  • 5 years of Spiritual Care experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
  • 2 years of student supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrates leadership amongst peers and clinical colleagues.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of fiscal responsibilities and adherance to budgets.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Knowledge in theories and methodologies related to SPE supervision drawn from adult education, spiritual / religious understanding, behavioural sciences, and professional and organizational ethics.
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others.
  • Demonstrates behaviours consistent with Mackenzie Health’s Commitment to Caring.
  • Models behaviour that is aligned with the values of Mackenzie Health Excellence, Leadership and Empathy.
  • Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for staff and patients within a challenging and rewarding health care environment.
