About the Role

As the Director of Software Engineering your focus is to build and manage a world-class team with a focus on successful delivery, great culture and team development.

You will be managing multiple cross functional teams that build out capabilities on our Network Management platform. You will form the leadership of our Engineering & QA teams and provide strategic input to the technical leadership team.

The successful candidate has a proven track record working in a multi-faceted role. You’ve hired and filled various technical roles, optimized on-boarding, you proactively identify and resolve obstacles for the team and have a penchant for team members to grow and develop their career.

Our engineering team is comprised of software engineers in backend, frontend, as well as site reliability & performance testing, QA, test automation and product management.

Our Technology Stack :

• Hosted on the Google Cloud Platform, utilizing cloud native services
• A combination of both Microservice and Monolithic architecture
• Stack includes : Java 8 / MySQL & GoLang / Couchbase

Responsibilities

• Manage, mentor and inspire a team of Engineers & QA team members, providing direction and raising the bar of the quality of their work and productivity
• Hold your teammates - and yourself - to high engineering standards that you further document, refine and reinforce
• Interview and recruit new team members, both employees and contractors
• Be part of the technical leadership team shaping its strategies and help growing an amazing organization, contributing to architecture & DevOps roadmaps with leaders from across the organization
• Prioritize and allocate project work to your team of engineers, with career development in mind
• Represent Real Matters in settings where deep knowledge of our tech stack is needed such as RFPs, Security Audits, employee on-boarding, etc.
• Evolve our new employee on-boarding program, with scalability in mind
• Develop and inspire team members to hit short- and long-term career growth targets
• Working closely with Development Leads, identifying and introducing changes in the way your teams operate to achieve a high performing state that advocates and advances modern software development and engineering practices
• Ensure the coding practices and SDLC followed adheres to the company’s security requirements and maximizes the value of the existing static and dynamic code scanning tools
• Advocate for security improvements, updated tooling or SDLC process changes where you see it necessary based on your depth of experience in industry security coding best practices and the evolving solutions for these problems

Skills and Expertise

• 5+ years of direct managerial leadership with teams that build SaaS-based technology, both on-prem and in a cloud environments, and can describe why these teams were high functioning and what you specifically did to ensure engineers felt productive
• A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering or related field, or equivalent training or work experience
• Deep understanding of engineering best practices and experience with building and maintaining SaaS based systems
• The interpersonal skills to help you work cross-functionally with business partners. You shine most at motivating others to carry forward and execute a strategy without needing to be in the room
• A significant practical experience in a variety of software development approaches including Agile and Waterfall
• Comfortable working closely with passionate engineers, technical product managers, QA and executives that care deeply about creating high-impact products.

You have a strong track record and a body of work that demonstrates clear wins and business impact.

• Hungry to learn and evolve in all things - from leadership skills and design craft to cloud technologies and process, you never stop pushing into the next big challenge
• You love helping engineers develop new skills and advance in their careers, and you do not shy away from performance conversations
• You recognize the relationship between objective feedback and career growth
• Interpersonal skills to help you work cross-functionally with business partners. You shine most at motivating others to carry forward and execute a strategy without needing to be in the room
• Significant practical experience in a variety of software development approaches including Agile and Waterfall
• Experience with static, dynamic and interactive code scanning tools and integration of these into an SDLC
• Familiarity with OWASP Top 10 software vulnerabilities and able to coach developers to avoid them, spot them in code reviews and have them devise coding standards, libraries & practices that eliminate them
