Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate will be working at our site office in Ottawa - 1800 Alta Vista Drive and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities.

Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular full-time Senior Research Associate to join our dynamic Donation Policy and Studies team in our Medical Affairs and Innovation division .

The Epidemiology department within Donation Policy and Studies is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by surveillance of blood-transmissible infections in donors, research on donor selection criteria, and evaluation of donor health criteria.

In this role, you will manage a large SAS database, provide advice and will be responsible for data collection and management to support research activities.

You will conduct statistical analysis and provide interpretation of study results. Prepare internal and external reports.

Compile documents / information regarding new issues in transfusion. You will also supervise research assistants and clerical staff and remain involved in all aspects of operations.

Drawing on your strong time management and organizational skills, you will coordinate study steps in scientific investigations, organize and carry out analytic activities.

Prepare and maintain standard research and data management protocols and develop analytic plans.

• Leveraging your continuous growth mindset and excellent interpersonal skills, you will advise the Associate Director regarding new statistical methodologies and techniques to support research activities.
• Harnessing your strong attention to detail and analytical skills, you will manage SAS databases and extract data for analysis.

Manage data collection and validation processes, plan and carry out statistical analysis.

Utilizing your knowledge and demonstrated expertise, you will ensure effective use of analytical and statistical techniques in evaluating results or changes.

Provide scientific interpretation of the results and prepare data for internal reports.

• Concentrating on your excellent communication and writing skills, you will write manuscripts for publication under the direction of the Associate Director.
• You will be responsible for conducting literature searches and producing critical summaries of literature on various issues in transfusion epidemiology.
• Leveraging your ability to lead and work collaboratively across a diverse team, you will supervise research assistants and clerical staff, assign duties and ensure completion of tasks.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Desired education and skills

• An MSc in Epidemiology / Biostatistics, Data Science or related field OR PhD.
• A minimum of five years of relevant work experience.
• An acceptable record of publication in scientific journals.
• Sound technical skills, in statistical and epidemiological software.
• Sound experience in SAS database management.
• Strong communication skills are essential.
• Excellent writing skills are essential.
• Previous supervisory and / or administrative experience an asset.
