Opportunity

The Honor Secondary School program Youth Worker’s primary focus is providing one-to-one support to students to ensure a successful school experience.

The core role is to support students to excel in the school setting. This may include participating in goal planning and providing teachers with information to develop the IEP.

The worker will have a sound understanding of both normal and delayed or problematic development behaviors and barriers, impulsivity, attachment issues, the effects of trauma, and learning disabilities such as FASD and ADHD.

Specific skills such as program development, sports, music, arts and crafts, and recreation planning are an asset in engaging youth in meaningful activities.

The HSS Youth Worker will possess a strong ability to provide assessments and behavior management in addition, teamwork, collaboration, and creativity are key desired assets in this role.

The person selected for this role will be part of a multidisciplinary team within the City Centre Youth Hub and will be able to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities :

  • Provide culturally safe and diverse, in-class support services to vulnerable youth in the Surrey area.
  • Establish relationships with youth to ensure they are supported to make connections to longer term community resources, specifically those that address their needs relating to education and life skills.
  • Engage with and encourage youth to participate in pro-social activities by supporting daily school-based outings in the community.
  • Participate in outdoor or gym activities such as hiking, swimming, sports, basketball etc...
  • Participate in team meetings and team building. Share ideas and understanding with team members and work collaboratively.
  • Administrative paperwork, daily case notes and statistical record keeping / reporting.
  • Staff will be required to provide one-to-one outreach to students experiencing barriers to class attendance. This could mean picking up students from home and bringing them to school.
  • Provide outreach support by taking youth to appointments in the community such as medical, legal, counselling, grocery shopping etc.
  • Support teaching staff to develop creative curriculum opportunities that mirror real life.

Qualifications :

B.A. in a related field plus one-year related experience working in a high school OR Child and Youth Care Diploma or Youth Justice Diploma plus three years’ experience working with multi-barriered or vulnerable youth.

Additional Assets

  • Criminal record check including the vulnerable sector.
  • Standard first-aid certificate and CPR
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license.
  • Business insurance use and use of own vehicle
  • Driver’s abstract must be submitted.
