Fractional / Part-Time Controller

Calgary, AB | Hybrid | 3–4 Days/Week | $50–$60/hour

The Opportunity

Our client is an innovative Calgary-based technology company advancing proprietary technology from development toward commercialization. Operating in a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment, the organization is seeking an experienced, hands-on Fractional Controller to take ownership of its accounting and financial reporting function while providing financial insight and support to the leadership team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced finance professional who enjoys working with early-stage and growth-oriented companies and is equally comfortable preparing financial statements and sophisticated financial models as they are managing the day-to-day accounting function.

The Fractional Controller will work approximately 3–4 days per week and must be based in Calgary. This is a hybrid role, with an expectation of being on-site approximately 1–2 days per week (or as needed), with the balance of the work completed remotely.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting, Planning & Analysis

• Prepare accurate and timely monthly financial statements and management reporting, including balance sheet, income statement and cash flow reporting.
• Manage month-end and year-end close processes, general ledger oversight and account reconciliations.
• Analyze financial results, variances and trends and provide meaningful insights to management.
• Develop and maintain cash flow forecasts, budgets and financial models to support business planning, scenario analysis and financing decisions.
• Create and maintain financial spreadsheets, reporting tools and analytical models to support management decision-making.
• Maintain appropriate accounting processes, procedures and internal controls.
• Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, tax advisors and other financial professionals as required.

Board, Investor & Corporate Support

• Prepare financial information, analysis and supporting materials for quarterly Board of Directors meetings and investor reporting.
• Provide financial input into Board and investor presentations, including financial results, forecasts, cash position and key financial metrics.
• Maintain the organization's capitalization table (Cap Table) and related equity information.
• Support financing, investment and due diligence activities through financial analysis, modelling and preparation of supporting documentation.
• Work collaboratively with leadership and external advisors on financial matters associated with the company's continued growth and commercialization.

Hands-On Accounting & Payroll

This is a hands-on Controller role. In addition to financial oversight and analysis, the successful candidate will manage the organization's day-to-day accounting requirements, including:

• Accounts payable and accounts receivable.
• Bank, credit card and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Cash management and banking activities.
• Semi-monthly payroll, including reconciliations and remittances.
• T4 preparation and year-end payroll requirements.
• GST and other applicable government filings and remittances.
• Maintaining accurate accounting records and supporting documentation.

The Fractional Controller will also help strengthen and evolve the organization's financial infrastructure, reporting processes and financial tools as the company continues to grow.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting expertise, financial analysis capabilities and a practical, hands-on approach.

• CPA designation is required.
• Significant progressive accounting and finance experience, ideally at the Controller, Assistant Controller or Finance Manager level.
• Strong understanding of the full accounting cycle, monthly financial reporting, year-end processes, internal controls and cash management.
• Demonstrated experience with cash flow forecasting, budgeting, financial modelling and scenario analysis.
• Advanced Excel and spreadsheet skills, including the ability to develop financial models and analytical reporting tools.
• Experience preparing financial information and analysis for senior leadership, investors and/or Boards of Directors.
• Hands-on experience with AP, AR, reconciliations, Canadian payroll and government remittances.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to translate financial information into practical business insights.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, take ownership of the finance function and operate effectively in an entrepreneurial environment.
• Experience within a startup, early-stage, technology, R&D or growth-oriented organization would be a strong asset.
• Experience with Cap Table management, financing/investor due diligence, government funding programs and/or grant reporting would be considered an asset.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who is practical, proactive and comfortable rolling up their sleeves—someone who can provide senior-level financial insight while still taking ownership of the day-to-day accounting function.
