Reports to : Executive Chef / Director of Culinary Services.

Experience :

3 years or more culinary experience as a Red Seal Cook in Hospitality, Catering, Retirement or Long-Term Care.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Responsible for ensuring that meals and beverages are delivered at the proper temperature, with attention to presentation and that the quality of the meal and the entire dining experience is paid close attention to.
  • To participate in the quality improvement plan by observing and reporting on how well menu items were received by the residents, paying particular attention to reporting on the number of items that were selected and the number of returned items as well as reporting on the number of off menu items that were ordered.
  • To understand and follow the recipes when preparing the Resident’s meals, including paying close attention to quality and presentation and limiting waste.
  • Understand dietary restrictions, allergies, and changes in diets for current residents.
  • Responsible for ensuring that proper food handling procedures and processes are followed.
  • To report any concerns that may come to your attention with respect to the change in status of any resident you encounter to the Health and Wellness team.
  • Must work at a timely and organized pace while maintaining a clean workstation.
  • Keep the common areas assigned to you clean and free of litter.
  • To report any concerns that may come to your attention concerning hazardous work to your direct supervisor and the Joint Health and Safety Committee
  • To participate in training and education and have the knowledge, understanding and capability to fulfill your role and respond to the various emergency codes.
  • Able to establish communication with appropriate sources in response to emergencies.
  • Practices universal precautions and adheres to WHMIS protocols.
  • Uses good body mechanics, appropriate mechanical aids and assistance from co-workers to prevent strain, injury or fatigue to self or resident.
  • Participate in meetings as scheduled.
  • Recognizes and reports safety concerns, including environmental hazards or equipment malfunction in the residence and acts accordingly to meet the safety and protection needs of the Residents.
  • Adheres closely to Scarborough Retirement Residence Employee policies and procedures, including protecting the residents' rights and in matters of confidentiality and privacy.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned, including additional duties outside the normal scope of practice, when these duties are appropriately delegated by a registered professional.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

  • Prolonged standing and walking.
  • Lifting and transferring heavy and hot items up to 50 lbs.
  • Hot environment and equipment.
  • Sharp and moving equipment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE REQUIRED :

  • 3 years or more culinary experience as a Red Seal Cook in Hospitality, Catering, Retirement or Long - Long-term care.
  • Experience with Baking.
  • Training from an accredited college or trade school.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Must have a Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Must have experience with special and therapeutic diets.
  • Available to work alternate weekends and be available for on-call shifts.
  • Must be physically able to lift and transfer heavy and hot items safely.
  • Immunization record - Tuberculosis Test.
  • Good ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing.
  • Some knowledge of interventions used in caring for seniors.
  • Applicants must agree to a Vulnerable Position / Sector Screening (VPS) and complete all required training as directed by Management during their employment.

Requirements :

  • Inter-Provincial Cook's Red Seal Certification - Mandatory.
  • Must have a Food Handler’s Certificate.
  • Must have experience with special and therapeutic diets.
  • Must be physically able to safely lift and transfer heavy and hot items.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods.
  • Must use Personal Protective Equipment such as gloves, non-slip foot ware and other items as required.
  • Must have a current Vulnerable Position / Sector Screening (VPS).
  • Immunization record - Tuberculosis Test Scarborough.
