Job summary

This role is that of a Sister / Charge Nurse based on Ward 40 Day Unit. Although there may occasionally be some flexibility required with hours the role will be mainly Monday - Friday working between the hours of -

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to work as part of the multi disciplinary team caring for patients undergoing termination of pregnancy.

The role involves collaborative working with nurse specialists, consultants, research teams as well as liasing with other departments such as fetal medicine to co ordinate care for patients suffering from fetal abnormalities and pregnancy loss.

As well as this you will also be expected to lead a small team made up of HCA's, staff nurses and student nurses.

Job description

Job responsibilities

You will be supported by our specialist placement nurse specialist who will ensure you receive training in dilapan insertion and carrying out assessments and allocations of patients.

You will also be supported to receive and process referrals from fetal medicine unit, Early pregnancy assessment clinic, British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) and Ante Natal Clinic.

You will organise your teams off duty in collaboration with Ward 40 Sisters to ensure your service is adequately and safely covered as well as managing all ward safety checks and compliances.

You will be expected to maintain high standards of care and be flexible and responsive to the needs of the service.

  • To support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP, acting as a deputy when the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP is absent.
  • In areas within the organisation Nurses / ODPs may be banded at 6 by virtue clinical reasons, for example, critical care.
  • Provide effective support and leadership to staff, patients and carers within the Theatre or Department.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
  • Effective member of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • May be required to participate in an On-call rota as required.

The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first months pay.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • oRegistered Nurse (appropriate to branch) / Operating Department Practitioner
  • oCurrent NMC / HCPC registration
  • oDiploma in a health related subject, prepared to take degree level study
  • oSpecialist qualification if relevant to role or previous experience
  • oMeets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship)

Desirable

  • oDegree in health related subject
  • oRelevant specialist qualification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • oPrevious post registration experience which must be relevant and recent
  • oEvidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development
  • oUnderstanding of professional accountability in a leadership role
  • oKnowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context
  • oHas understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding

Desirable

  • oAudit / research experience
  • oRelevant clinical skills relating to the specialty cannulation / IV drug administration / anaesthetic skills appropriate to speciality
