Job Description

Join our Facilities Management Division on our Custodial and Maintenance team, where our people are driven by a desire to innovate, do social good, and move services forward in a safe manner.

This permanent full-time position is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, with a in-office work arrangement available.

Reporting to the Sr. Manager, HSE, the HSE Advisor will mainly support Dexterra's Transit Operations portfolio and will be responsible for providing leadership, guidance, and technical expertise to operational teams in the implementation and continuous improvement of health, safety, and environmental programs.

The successful candidate will partner closely with operational leadership, employees, union representatives, Joint Health and Safety Committees, clients, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance, drive positive safety outcomes, and foster a strong safety culture across multiple transit and infrastructure locations.

YOUR WORK WILL INCLUDE:

  • Maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders through effective communication and collaboration.
  • Identifying HSEQ risks, hazards, problems, and issues as early as possible and ensuring appropriate mitigating actions are implemented.
  • Providing guidance and support to operational leadership on legislative requirements, company standards, policies, and industry best practices.
  • Effectively communicating HSEQ expectations and initiatives to all stakeholders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Providing training resources, coaching, leadership, organization, and control to meet the company's HSEQ goals and objectives.
  • Managing and measuring HSEQ program performance to achieve targeted business outcomes and continuous improvement objectives.
  • Preparing and presenting monthly HSE statistics, trends, and performance reports for leadership review.
  • Managing the administration and effectiveness of the health and safety program, including maintaining documentation, establishing performance measures, and reporting on program results.
  • Conducting workplace inspections, audits, risk assessments, and compliance reviews.
  • Leading or supporting incident investigations, root cause analyses, corrective action development, and follow-up activities.
  • Monitoring compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations, client requirements, and Dexterra policies and procedures.
  • Coordinating with Disability Management and operational teams on workplace injury and illness claims.
  • Ensuring all levels of management are informed of activities related to regulatory compliance, health and safety performance, and emerging risks.
  • Participating in client meetings, safety committees, audits, and operational reviews as required.
  • Working collaboratively within unionized environments to address health and safety concerns and support positive labour-management relations.


Qualifications

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

  • University Degree or College Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Industrial Relations, Human Resources, or a related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout Metro Vancouver and other locations within British Columbia as required.
  • Strong working knowledge of WorkSafeBC legislation, occupational health and safety regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting incident investigations, workplace inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and corrective action management.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply risk assessment and hazard identification methodologies within operational environments.
  • Ability to influence and coach leaders, supervisors, and frontline employees on health and safety matters.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working within unionized environments is mandatory.
  • Experience working directly with union representatives and Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs) is mandatory.
  • Experience supporting multi-site operations and geographically dispersed workforces.
  • Experience interpreting and applying occupational health and safety legislation and company management systems.
  • Experience leading workplace investigations and supporting return-to-work and disability management processes.

ASSETS

  • Experience supporting transit, rail, transportation, public infrastructure, or other safety-sensitive operations is a strong asset.
  • Experience working within Facilities Management (FM) or similar service delivery environments.
  • Bilingualism in English/French or English/Spanish.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation.
  • COR Auditor certification.
  • Experience supporting large public-sector or transportation clients.
