Position Summary
Reporting to the Program Coordinator, Bayview Hill Community Centre, the Recreation Assistant, will provide assistance in the development and delivery of recreation programs, program partnership summer camps, and initiatives associated with the Youth Action Committee. This position will follow the City's core values of Care, Collaboration, Courage, and Service.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Research, develop, implement, supervise and evaluate recreation programs in conjunction with the Program Coordinator
- Supervise and oversee program and activity operations at Bayview Hill Community Centre, and other locations, including registered programs, drop‑in programs and camps
- Supervise the Youth Action Committee initiatives, events, and recruitment, in conjuction with the Program Coordinator
- ensure that High 5 Principles of Healthy Child Development and physical literacy are included in programs for children.
- Instruct programs when required
- Assist with the development and delivery of all marketing and promotion materials for the recreation programs and Youth Action Committee
- Participate in the recruitment process of part time program and volunteers, conduct training and orientations sessions for staff and volunteers
- Ensure required training and qualifications are completed and valid such as First Aid, and Health and safety and HR training
- Develop, approve and implement appropriate staff schedules for direct reports, as well as verify payroll
- Provide direction, guidance, supervision and performance evaluations for direct reports
- Create a positive experience for patrons by providing exceptional customer service
- Respond to customer inquiries and program issues for all programs and permits
- Responsible for tracking, preparing and forecasting budget needs
- Perform administration functions in accordance with City policy and procedures as it relates to finance, purchasing, staff sign‑up etc.
Education and Experience
College Diploma in Recreation Leadership or equivalentStandard First AID and CPR C requiredHIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Child Development Certificate considered an asset1 - 3 years of experience in a community or municipal recreation environment working in recreation programs, and with teen programmingRequired Skills / Knowledge
Understanding of recreation trends, especially as they relate to recreation programs and teen activitiesAbility to independently resolve problems and issues under minimal supervisionProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications with a strong knowledge of Excel and WordWell organized, independent and highly‑motivated, with the ability to handle multiple job responsibilities, set priorities, problem solve and work with all levels of staffProven interpersonal skills to foster and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, demonstrating high proficiency in conflict resolution and negotiation skillsMust possess a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's License, and have access to a vehicle for use on corporate business (mileage compensated) and will be required to provide proof of vehicle insurance upon hireA satisfactory Police Vulnerable Screening Check is requiredManages organizational change through strong leadership and communication skillsDemonstrates and encourages perseverance and resilience in difficult timesDemonstrates strong written and verbal communication skillsEncourages innovative thinking and new ideasProven ability to oversee and track budgetsDemonstrates and encourages excellent listening skills and different points of viewEnsures that objectives and accountabilities are clearly communicated within the departmentEmpowers staff to support a culture of learning, mentoring and sharingLeadership Competencies
