Financial Controller

We are seeking a Controller to oversee the financial operations of a company that supports the agricultural industry, with its location in Edmonton and Saskatoon.

The Controller will play a pivotal role in the financial health of the organization, bringing a strategic perspective to the organization’s finance and accounting needs and providing financial information vital to the company decision-making process.

What you do

• You oversee and manage the entire financial department, including supervision of the Accounts Payable (AP), Accounts Receivable (AR), and payroll teams in partnership with third-party service providers.
• You maintain expert-level knowledge of Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE) and ensure compliance with relevant provincial, federal, and international laws and accounting standards.
• You monitor debt levels and ensure compliance with debt covenants.
• You prepare comprehensive financial reports for diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, banking institutions, grant applications, and the Board of Directors.
• You provide financial analysis and insights into capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
• You assist in developing financial budgets for new proposals and projects.
• You maintain and enhance systems of internal controls to safeguard the organization's financial assets.
• You oversee the coordination and activities of external auditors
• You ensure compliance with provincial, federal, and international laws, as well as all applicable accounting standards.
• You collaborate closely with the senior management team to understand and contribute to all facets of the business
• You review spending and budgets regularly with the CFO and the accounting team.
• You assist in defining the company's financial objectives and provide key financial analysis to support decision-making.
• You supervise and mentor the Accounts Payable (AP) team, Accounts Receivable (AR) team, and payroll team.
• You manage employee schedules, shifts, vacation coverage, and cross-training to ensure efficient departmental operations.
• You support the creation and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to financial processes and controls.

Who you are

• You have a CPA designation and good standing with CPA Alberta.
• You have strong leadership and management skills with the ability to lead and inspire teams.
• You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with stakeholders.
• You have proven experience in financial analysis, budgeting, and financial reporting.
• You have a solid knowledge of ASPE and accounting standards.
• You have strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• You possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• You can prioritize and focus on major financial issues.
• You have commitment to confidentiality and discretion.
• You are proficient in the use of financial software and tools, including QuickBooks Enterprise.
• You can work extended hours during busy seasons.
