Description
Historians extract useable information from often fragmented material created for various other purposes. This course will provide students with the tools needed to handle specific types of sources (textual, visual, oral or material) or introduce them to specific methods and approaches (such as geographic information system, quantitative methods, micro-history etc.
Topics will vary from section to section and the course can be repeated for credit if the content is different. Reserved for the students registered in the Honours, Joint Honours, Major in history.

In this class, students will study primary sources and consider their context and how to use them systematically to create text.
Students will explore government and private archival records, newspapers, mail-order catalogues, film, photographs, court documents, memoirs, maps, material culture, and oral history as well as secondary sources.
We will approach this work by considering the role of archivists, those who care for, collect, and manage primary sources and historians and we will also the role of curators, knowledge, and memory keepers.
We will also look broadly at what we can learn about the past regarding public history, Indigenous history methodologies, microhistory, and the practice of history from a transnational perspective.
