Job description

Description

Justice and Reconciliation Fund Committee

The National Indigenous Council is seeking volunteers to serve on this committee that play an essential role in supporting the ministry of the Indigenous church.

Mandate: The Justice and Reconciliation Fund assists the church in responding to the legacy of harm and broken relationships that have resulted from the Indian Residential School system. The committee reviews applications and decides on grants to support projects or events that foster dialogue, reconciliation, and relationship-building between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Skills: We are looking for people who can see the possibilities in an application and assess its merits. Members should understand the overall reconciliation goals of the United Church, the history of relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada, and the role of churches in residential schools. Members should also be familiar with the kinds of activities that support relationship-building and the education of church members on these topics. Members need to be open to collaborative decision-making.

Vacancies: Two Indigenous members.

Membership: The Justice and Reconciliation Fund Committee has five members, including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous United Church members.

Expectations and Term

  • Online meetings: 2 meetings each year held by videoconference (in spring and fall)
  • In-person meetings: Once each year, to be held in different locations
  • Expectations between meetings: To prepare for each meeting, committee members carefully review 10 to 20 project submissions, considering the criteria of the fund, the suitability of the budget, and overall merit. Members should have internet access for meetings and for receiving documents
  • Additional appointment possibilities or expectations: None
  • Appointment term: 3 years with the possibility of reappointment for a second term
