The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation is responsible for British Columbia's electricity, alternative energy, mining and petroleum resource sectors, and supporting work to meet BC's greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The British Columbia Geological Survey's (BCGS) mission is to provide accessible geoscience expertise, evolving knowledge, new technology and comprehensive public geoscience data to benefit land use planning and governance, societal development, low carbon innovation, economic opportunity, education services and Indigenous reconciliation in British Columbia.

The BCGS creates and disseminates public geoscience information that supports effective mineral exploration, sound land use management, responsible governance and attracts investment.

The Mineral Deposit Geologist investigates mineral systems in British Columbia, collects and interprets geoscience data, conducts field surveys for thematic mineral system studies, to provide geological maps, reports, and other British Columbia Geological Survey products.

Job Requirements :

  • Minimum of a Masters' degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, or related subject from a university of recognized standing.
  • Registered or immediately eligible* for registration (within 6 months of employment) as a fully qualified Professional Geoscientist with the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC;
  • Note : Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Geoscientist in another Canadian jurisdiction, and able to transfer that membership to the EGBC within 6 months of employment.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.

  • Minimum of four years relevant professional experience in geological mapping, mineral exploration, or mining geology.
  • Experience with geological field work and / or mapping in remote terrain.
  • Experience supervising junior colleagues and assistants.
  • Experience working with a broad range of computer software such as MS Office, GIS, graphics packages and databases to produce geological and / or mineral maps and reports.
  • Experience giving presentations at conferences or technical meetings.
  • Experience in the compilation, evaluation, synthesis and interpretation of various strands of data including geological, geochemical, geochronological and / or geophysical.

Preference

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with government geoscience programs / field projects.

This can be either internal experience or external experience.

Preference will be given to candidates who have knowledge of the bedrock geology and mineral deposits of the Canadian Cordillera.

Willingness Statements / Provisos :

  • Willingness to travel and spend multiple weeks away from home each year, including in remote field locations that may only be accessible by helicopter.
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver's license or equivalent.

About this Position :

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 3 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.

An eligibility may be established for temporary or permanent positions

Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.

Position is located in Victoria

Travel throughout the Province of BC, potentially including remote wilderness environments for extended periods of time.
