Alberta Infrastructure is responsible for delivering about one quarter of the Alberta government’s Capital Plan, which addresses the provincial infrastructure needs of Alberta’s population that support key social programs and services and economic development.

The Ministry designs, builds, manages, and maintains government‑owned and operated facilities, and collaborates with other ministries to ensure that school and hospital infrastructure meet the needs of Alberta’s population. Infrastructure also provides accommodation services and manages a large portfolio of owned and leased facilities while maintaining fiscal accountability and optimizing value for Albertans.

Reporting to the Facilities Coordinator, the Building Superintendent is responsible for the hands‑on day‑to‑day operations and maintenance of the Royal Tyrrell Museum and a number of Government of Alberta buildings within Drumheller, Hanna, Oyen and Coronation area. Services are completed through a combination of in‑house staff and outsourced service contracts.

The Building Superintendent directs and monitors staff and contractors to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the facility. This includes caretaking, maintenance, landscaping, snow removal.

The Building Superintendent also develops and maintains positive relations with client / tenants while ensuring that the facilities are maintained with established standards applicable codes in a cost‑effective manner and to the highest client satisfaction.

The primary responsibilities for the Building Superintendent include, but are not limited to :

  • Ensuring the safe, effective, and efficient facility maintenance and operations to preserve property values while also meeting client requirements
  • Trouble shooting, repairing, and maintaining HVAC, Refrigeration and Electrical systems
  • Performing daily preventative maintenance tasks outlined in the GOA maintenance system
  • Ensuring a well‑trained, service‑oriented work unit through direction of maintenance staff, utilizing sound supervisory practices consistent with HR policies and the Collective Agreement
  • With the support of the facilities coordinator, manages contracted services and ensures work is completed within contract provisions
  • Developing and maintaining positive client relations
  • Monitoring of contract terms and durations
  • Immediately reporting OH&S incidents, near‑misses, unsafe conditions, and / or at‑risk behaviors to their supervisor; then diligently work to correct the problem
  • Completing detailed Building Inspections / Reports, including building envelope, mechanical system, and electrical systems
  • Participation on OH&S committee, and other relevant committees

    Required :

  • 2-year Technical Diploma in Engineering or related discipline
  • 5th Class Plant Operation or Trade Certification
  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance systems
  • Water Treatment system operations
  • HVAC, Cooling and Refrigeration Systems trouble shooting experience.
  • Working knowledge of Pneumatic control systems
  • Thorough knowledge of the Safety Codes Act
  • WHMIS, Confined Space, H2S Alive, Fall Protection and First Aid Certifications
  • Equivalency : Related experience or education (e.g. related diploma) may be considered as an equivalency on a one for one basis.

    Assets :

  • Experience with supervising staff and working as a team player
  • Excellent knowledge of building operations and all associated mechanical / electrical functions using FMS, WORTS, and BMCS
  • Superior working knowledge of building, equipment and grounds maintenance
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems related to CCTV Systems and Security door controls
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures and collective agreements with respect to Human Resources
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications

    This position is a Permanent, full‑time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8 : 15 am – 4 : 30 pm).
