Job Summary

Queen’s University has a partnership with the University of Gondar to advance inclusive education for young people with disabilities in Ethiopia and Africa through a grant from The Mastercard Foundation.

As part of the Foundation’s Scholars Program, the partnership will provide 450 next-generation African leaders with a high-quality education at the University of Gondar, while also providing 60 of the university’s faculty members with the opportunity to study at Queen’s, where they will enhance their skills in innovative pedagogy and in leading collaborative research between African and North American universities.

The University of Gondar and Queen’s University will also collaborate to develop Ethiopia’s first occupational therapy program.

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Research & Learning Coordinator leads the implementation of research and learning activities related to the Queen’s & University of Gondar (UoG) Mastercard Foundation Scholars Project.

This role develops and implements the monitoring and evaluation tools used to assess the project outcomes including midterm and final project evaluation.

The incumbent also prepares monitoring, evaluation, and learning reports to submit to the funder. In all these activities, the incumbent will liaise with the project team, and Queen’s Office of Research Services.

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Support, manage and monitor the progress of research projects. Conduct periodic reviews of the project. Measure progress towards the established outcomes.

Provide feedback to project PIs on progress and reporting requirements. Reports findings to the leadership team.

  • Participate in the design and development of research study protocols and draft initial proposal outlines, prepare research proposals and Research Ethics Board submissions.
  • Conduct detailed literature searches, create literature databases, and assess research information and document findings to support the development and learning in areas of disability and inclusion.
  • Collect and analyze data for assigned research projects.
  • Conduct interviews with key informants, and experts to gather information required for project(s) assigned. Assess retrieved information and assist in the analysis of data using appropriate qualitative methodology.
  • Support project learning through completion of analysis of tools and dissemination of findings. Draft reports and prepare results for presentation, usually in the form of a written report or proposal or PowerPoint.
  • Support the preparation of relevant peer reviewed publications for submission to academic journals.
  • Develop curriculum material, and deliver training to project participants to support project goals (e.g. CBR certificate).
  • Liaise with Student and Faculty Liaison and distribute information about established and new sources of research funding to the appropriate UoG faculty completing their PhD and Queen’s to support their research.
  • Schedule and arrange research funding opportunity workshops, encouraging researchers to attend to inform them of the research opportunity to enhance collaboration activities.
  • Work with a team to implement and monitor online platforms for researchers interested in collaboration.
  • Develop and implement the monitoring and evaluation plan for the project providing updates to team.
  • Advise the relevant individuals on research and evaluation activities (helping develop tools, implement, advise, analyze data, etc.).
  • Organize, attend, participate, and provide related support for conferences, meetings, events, agencies, and competitions that will profile and advance internal and external research activities.

Duties include drafting and distributing correspondence and compiling background information.

  • As a member of the department, contribute to optimal performance by implementing department objectives and actively engaging in the identification of goals, measures of success and process improvements.
  • Undertake other duties in support of the department.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field combined with several (5+) years of relevant research and / or coordination experience.
  • Experience conducting research and qualitative data analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience with use of on-line literature search engines and literature databases such as RefWorks, EMBASE and PUBMED.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • Knowledge of relevant university practices and procedures is an asset.
  • Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Advanced computer skills, with knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SPSS and the Internet.
  • Qualitative and quantitative research skills.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, be well organized and possess very good planning skills to meet deadlines. This position requires a high degree of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, or as part of a team as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to search out sources of funding / research information on the web, identify research opportunities and trends and to learn the policies and practices of various organizations or funding agencies.
  • Ability to perform accounting and financial management duties, including ability to analyze and present financial data.

DECISION MAKING :

  • Make recommendations for strategic plans, determining the best approach for implementation to ensure research goals and objectives are met.
  • Make suggestions on data collection, presentation of results and coordination of activities.
  • In consultation with the Principal Investigator, determine layout, content, and formatting of documentation.
  • Decide how new information will change the course of a project or event and recommend appropriate responses to ensure the highest possibility for success.
  • Decide how to coordinate time and effort in supporting the various research projects and activities to ensure critical deadlines are met while maintaining a high degree of quality.
  • Determine appropriate responses to queries and distribute research materials to appropriate recipients.
  • Determine how, when, and to whom research funding information will be distributed, while carefully matching researcher interests.
  • Assess and determine when to refer issues to senior leadership.
