Scope of the position
Reporting to the Senior Director, Corporate Accounting, the Corporate Accounting Manager will be an integral part of the Corporate Accounting team, whose primary responsibilities will include monthly accounting and financial reporting and ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of external reporting.
This role will also lead the Fixed Assets team and ensure the completeness, existence and accuracy of the entity's fixed asset and acquisition accounting.
This requires superior business partnership skills, technical accounting knowledge, analytical strength and attention to detail, and the ability to meet challenging deadlines.
Key Activities
Financial Reporting :
- Participate in the planning, automation and preparation of Quarterly and Annual Management Discussion and Analysis ("MD&A") and consolidated financial statements for the Trust and its subsidiaries, and other external filings.
- Ensure consistency among various quarterly reporting and regulatory reporting documents
- Research and prepare technical accounting memos
- Communicate key accounting matters and findings to tax and other teams that may be impacted
- Deal with senior level auditors in explaining accounting issues
- Manage system hierarchies and ensure they address corporate accounting needs
- Prepare the primary LP statements with proper understanding of the structure
- Manage the quarterly post close process and drive the reduction of post close entries by advocating best practices and partnering with operations on a timely basis
- Effectively communicate with senior management and executives
- Liaise with external auditors
- Prepare financial statements of various subsidiaries of the Trusts that are subject to stand alone audits
Financial Accounting :
- Participate in daily corporate accounting and reporting activities.
- Perform analysis and determine appropriate accounting for business acquisitions and dispositions.
- Prepare Statement of Accounting Adjustments for acquisitions and dispositions and be responsible for recording the accounting entries by liaising with other teams.
- Be proactive in setting up structures in HFM and Yardi for acquisitions
- Ensure all fixed asset, development and acquisition accounting for both corporate and operations items comply with Corporate accounting policies and IFRS and drive the development of policies and procedures as needed.
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert and the main point of contact for any development accounting, capital assets, capital purchase orders, and capital policies related inquiries to external auditors and internal clients.
- Review the work in process subledgers for developments and discuss any unusual items with the development team on a monthly basis.
- Review monthly capital lease reconciliation, depreciation expense analysis, insurance entries and Sub-ledger vs GL reconciliation to ensure variances are resolved in the timely manner.
- Identify automation ideas and implement automation to improve the fixed asset process by working closely with the Yardi team.
- Be the main point of contact for the external auditors for all fixed assets related queries
- Review quarterly financial statement notes and public filing disclosures related to Capital Assets, Leases, and other schedules as required.
- Provide support to the Senior Manager, Corporate Accounting for quarterly impairment testing and analysis.
- Ensure completeness of all disclosure support files for our public filings.
- Maintain well documented tie in files for the relevant sections for all quarterly published reports / documents.
- Recommend and implement efficiency in processes.
- Ensure all financial accounting for both corporate and operations items comply with Corporate accounting policies and drive the development of policies and procedures as needed.
- Undertake technical accounting research and manage the implementation of new accounting standards.
- Participate in the budgeting and forecasting activities of Corporate Accounting.
- Other projects and ad-hoc activities as required.
Team Management :
Provide daily oversight and manage two report directs as leader of the Fixed Assets team, including recruitment, training, mentorship and performance management.
Perform adhoc projects as required as well as process improvement initiatives.
- Promote a spirit of cooperation and teamwork by taking the initiative to improve the team's effectiveness.
- Appropriately delegate and provide development experiences for direct reports.
- Serve as a source of technical / financial expertise and set meaningful objectives for direct reports.
Qualifications
Experience and Education :
- Canadian CPA designation preferably with significant exposure to public company reporting.
- Five to seven years of progressive accounting experience from leading accounting firms at the senior 2 accountant / manager level and 1- 2 years of industry experience preferably in the seniors housing, real estate, hospitality, and / or health care sectors, with Canadian public companies.
- Advanced knowledge of financial reporting and accounting and experienced in resolving complex accounting issues.
- Experience using accounting systems, specifically Yardi, Oracle Hyperion HFM and / or OneStream.
- A post-secondary degree from a recognized institution in the field of accounting, finance, or business administration.
Skills and Abilities :
- Strong financial and analytical skills, as well as demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, at all levels of the organization.
- Excel proficiency (intermediate to advanced) is mandatory.
- Sound managerial and mentoring skills.
- Strong knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is required.
