INDIGENOUS STUDENT SUPPORT WORKER - CASUAL

Position Description :

There are positions available for casual Indigenous Student Support Workers with School District No. 60. Applications must be completed online and will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the positions are filled.

Reporting to the site Administrative Officer(s) and the District Administrative Officer Indigenous Education, the Indigenous Student Support Worker provides assistance to teachers and other staff in attending to the educational, social / emotional and cultural needs of Indigenous students.

They also assist in identifying and addressing situations which affect students.

The role of the Indigenous Student Support Worker (ISSW) is to provide identified Indigenous students with opportunities to enhance their cultural, emotional, and social well-being while ensuring their academic success.

The ISSW must have the ability to work independently, and collaboratively, with teachers and the Indigenous Education Centre staff.

ISSW's responsibilities vary according to the students' and school needs but with the ultimate objective of assisting students in order to foster educational success.

Hours of work : On an as needed basis

Duties to Commence : As soon as possible after closing

Work Year Base : Ten (10) months per year

Commencing Salary : $26.21 / hr.

Duties :

Collect and maintain Indigenous student self-identification and parent consent forms (1701s) to ensure audit compliance.

Reports directly to their site Administrative Officer(s) and District Indigenous Principal.

In cooperation with he site Administrative Officer(s), and the District Indigenous Principal, creates a weekly / bi-weekly / monthly schedule for working with their Indigenous students.

Maintain accurate and comprehensive student records as directed by the District Indigenous Principal.

Monitors and provides support to Indigenous students and their families, as well as being the liaison between the school and the Indigenous communities within their assigned school catchment.

Attend ISSW meetings as requested by the District Indigenous Principal.

Attend directed professional development in-services.

Providing academic support for Indigenous students', educational programming through in-class assistance as appropriate either individually, small group or classroom.

Providing relevant student information for School Based Team meetings.

Provide an Indigenous perspective to all students and staff at their assigned school(s) such as :

Connecting school and staff to resources.

Enhancing school and staff understanding of Indigenous worldview and perspectives.

ISSW may be called upon to act as s guest speaker to supplement lessons.

Organize and facilitate culturally relevant experiences for students both in the school and in the community.

Providing support for Indigenous students' cultural growth as appropriate either individually, as a small group, or as a whole class activity.

Assumes other responsibilities that are site and program specific.

When requested by the site Administrative Officer(s) or District Principal of Indigenous Education, conduct home visits.

By their presence the ISSW must be a positive Indigenous role model for students, staff and community.

May be required to attend off site / overnight school activities.

Other job related tasks as directed.

Qualifications and Attributes :

Grade 12 or equivalency

1 year of training and / or recent experience (within 5 years) working with Indigenous people would be an asset

Access to a reliable mode of transportation

Ability to work independently and set priorities

WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period

Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team

Must be able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search conducted by the District prior to starting employment

Proven knowledge and experience with Indigenous culture is a requirement

Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Indigenous ancestry (per Human Rights Variance). Proof of ancestry is required
