Job Overview : Under the general supervision of the Clinic Team Lead(s) / Clinic Manager and as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) delivers comprehensive care to address the needs of our community members.
The LPN plays a crucial role in the clinic’s operations, including conducting initial triage, performing patient assessments, providing treatment, managing cases, coordinating care, and performing phlebotomy.
The LPN is responsible for adhering to professional standards set by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta, the Canadian Nurses’ Association Code of Ethics, and the Health Professions Act.
This position is full-time (1.0 FTE).
Key Responsibilities :
- Conduct initial triage of walk-in clientele to the medical clinic, evaluating both clinical needs and the suitability of new clients for Alex services.
- Operate independently, following clinical protocols, to deliver direct client care and treatment according to their clinical schedule.
- Execute the initial assessment of new Alex clients to determine their acceptance into the Alex paneled care streams.
- Perform physical assessments, compile health history, document surgical and medication history, and apply other assessment skills as needed.
- Treat minor wounds and administer routine medical procedures, including injections, visual acuity screening, ear flushing, assisting clinicians in minor procedures, ECGs, suture / staple removal, and other required tasks.
- Carry out phlebotomy and collect specimens as directed by primary care practitioners and walk-in care streams.
- Oversee the management and administration of medications in all available formats.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including nurse practitioners, physicians, social workers, case managers, medical specialists, registered nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, and other professionals.
- Coordinate with MOAs, receptionists, and the administration team to support the provision of care at the Alex clinics.
- Adapt to peak periods and high-flow times by working together with team members to facilitate best practice clinical care.

Qualifications and Experience :
- Diploma in Nursing.
- Current registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses in Alberta (CLPNA).
- Minimum of two years progressive nursing experience working with clients with mental health and addictions disorders, homelessness, and poverty.
- Capable of working independently, collaboratively within a team, and effectively with clients.
- Excellent communication, organizational, advocacy, teaching, and rapport-building skills.
- Able to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team model and innovative outreach service delivery model.
- Experience with community outreach and crisis intervention.
- Knowledge of social services and non-profit services in Calgary is an asset.
- Experience with group facilitation is an asset.
- Completion of Immunization module by CLPNA or Immunization Certificate.
- Strong commitment to working with individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness and addictions.
- Strong skills in health promotion and illness prevention.
- Ability to build rapport with marginalized individuals, understanding of Mature Minor Doctrine in Alberta, time management skills, ability to work independently.
- Ability to multi-task in fast-paced environment.
- Standard / Intermediate First Aid Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid (Basic or Intermediate) Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
- A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and child welfare intervention check are required.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation.
Work Environment and Hours :
- Standard hours 8 : 30 4 : 30, Monday to Friday.
- Occasionally requires extended periods of sitting, standing, and / or walking.
- Occasional carrying objects up or down stairwells.
- Occasionally involves physical action and requires the ability to bend / crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel / crawl, and carry objects (less than 20 Ibs) frequently throughout the shift.
- Occasional time outside in all weather conditions.
