The Relief Front Desk Support Worker is responsible for welcoming and providing supportive reception service and works within a collaborative team to create a meaningful and relevant environment for tenants, participants and guest within a feminist framework.

This includes a skilled response to and knowledge of the dynamics and effects of trauma, mental health and oppression. The position is also responsible for completing administrative duties necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the front desk.

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO Housing Support Program YWCA Toronto Housing Support Program offers a range of housing options for women and women led households, including permanent and supportive housing at a variety of YWCA owned and operated locations.

Individual and group support assists tenants to identify and build the skills required to the address the barriers they experience in their lives and to maintain their housing.

Barriers tenants and their children experience include mental health and / or addictions, poverty and experiences of violence.

Supports are intended to assist women to build the skills required to participate in their community both inside and outside of the building and if they are able and ready, to move to housing without supports.

  • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Greets and directs tenants, participants, guests, contractors and suppliers to the site; Answers telephone and in person inquiries regarding 1 st Stop Woodlawn and Permanent Housing and directs calls to the appropriate staff or program;
  • Maintains building entry, ensuring access to authorized persons only; May be required to attend at Landlord and Tenant Board hearings and act as a witness as required;
  • Applies knowledge of the issue of trauma and the dynamics of woman abuse to respond effectively to tenant requests for support;
  • Assists in providing orientation to new tenants to ensure familiarity and understanding of programs, staff and community environment;
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant community services related to tenant service needs; Maintains occupancy lists and updated tenant lists;
  • Records when rooms are vacated by tenants at 1 st Stop Woodlawn Residence; Prepares housekeeping lists daily and communicates room vacancies to the appropriate staff;
  • Accepts meal plan payments from tenants at 1 st Stop Woodlawn and issues receipts; Inputs medical appointments and cancellations for shelter residents into ICHA website;
  • Monitors issues of unauthorized parking (redirecting issues to housing workers or security staff on site to address immediately);
  • Reports all disturbances, vandalism and other emergencies to the supervisor, filling out an incident report as required;

Facilitates access to keys for tenants moving in and out and returns keys to the Property Services Department; When required, uses mediation and de-escalation skills to encourage and maintain a cooperative, supportive and safe community.

  • QUALIFICATIONS Completion of an undergraduate university degree in a relevant field (e.g. Social Work) ( Cases for Equivalency will be considered );
  • 1-3 years directly related work experience in supportive housing; Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Excellent customer service, organizational and administrative abilities; knowledge of security operating systems an asset;
  • Experience working in a residential setting an asset; Ability to deliver culturally sensitive service in a multicultural environment;
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and experience working with women living with experiences of precarious housing, poverty, violence / trauma, and mental health / concurrent addictions issues;
  • Knowledge and experience working from an anti-oppression framework and trauma informed practices; Knowledge of harm reduction framework and Residential Tenancies Act;
  • Completion of the Toronto Shelter Standards training; Toronto Hostel Training Centre’s certificate and WHMIS training an asset;
  • Ability to maintain a positive approach and a professional manner at all times; Demonstrated experience working under pressure and remaining calm in a crisis;

Knowledge and experience in de-escalating conflict and responding to crisis situations; Exceptional verbal and good written communication skills.
