Position Overview
Reporting to the Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) in provides advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for patients experiencing substance use disorders (SUD), co‑occurring mental health conditions, and related medical complexities in a residential setting. Working as a core member of an interdisciplinary team, the NP delivers trauma‑informed, recovery‑oriented, patient-centered care. The NP practices autonomously within their legislative scope while collaborating closely with medical, nursing, and therapeutic staff to support safe detoxification, medication‑assisted treatment (MAT), psychiatric stabilization, and long-term recovery planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive physical assessments for patients with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health diagnoses.
- Diagnose acute withdrawal syndromes, psychiatric conditions, chronic illnesses, and addiction‑related complications.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized treatment plans for addiction and mental health conditions.
- Provide medical oversight of withdrawal management, including monitoring symptoms, safety, and stabilization.
- Prescribe and manage medication-assisted treatments (MAT), such as: Buprenorphine/naloxone, Methadone (if licensed), Naltrexone, Anti-craving medications, Psychotropic medications
- Manage concurrent medical conditions commonly linked to addiction (e.g., liver disease, infections, chronic pain).
- Interpret lab work and diagnostic imaging.
- Monitor treatment response and side effects for psychotropic medications.
- Work closely with physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, therapists, social workers, and support workers.
- Participate in clinical rounds, case reviews, and care conferences as necessary.
- Provide education on addiction, relapse prevention, harm reduction, medications, and mental health management.
- Empower patients toward recovery using motivational interviewing and strengths‑based approaches.
- Support families with education and guidance on treatment progress and expectations as required.
- Document assessments and interventions accurately in electronic medical records.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, prescribing regulations, privacy laws, and organizational policies.
- Promote patient safety by identifying risks early and participating in quality improvement initiatives related to addiction and mental health.
- Assume responsibility and accountability for own professional development, educational or consultative assistance
- Ability to be part of on call rotation

Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Nursing and NP designation
- Active NP licensure with prescribing authority in good standing.
- Experience in addiction medicine, psychiatry, or complex continuing care strongly preferred.
- Training or certification in: Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT), Trauma-informed care, considered an asset
- Excellent diagnostic reasoning for both medical and psychiatric conditions.
