Assistant Canoe Guide – Pathfinder ‘Secondman’
Camp Pathfinder 2026 Season
Position Summary
Camp Pathfinder is a canoe tripping camp for boys aged 7-16 located on a rustic 17 acre island in Source Lake, Algonquin Park. Each summer Pathfinder hosts approximately 100 boys at a time for sessions ranging from 1 to 7 weeks. Pathfinder is accredited by the Ontario Camps Association and maintains industry leading practices in all of its programs. Pathfinder is seeking young men age 17 and up with camping and/or canoeing experience to work in an apprentice guiding role. Assistant guides at Pathfinder are called ‘Second Men’. Secondmen work closely under the mentorship of Headmen to support the overall success, safety, and positive dynamics of Pathfinder canoe trips. When not on a canoe trip, Second Men serve as camp counselors at Pathfinder Island, living with boys in platform tents and cabins and supervising their activities.
Canoe Trip Responsibilities
- Assist canoe trip headman in all aspects of trip preparation including route planning, gear and food outfitting, and supporting campers in packing and preparing for trip
- Carry out most basic activities of a canoe guide including stern paddling, canoe portaging, map and compass navigation, camp fire building, campsite set-up and maintenance, supervision of camper health, safety, and positive social dynamics
- Support Headman in all trip responsibilities including foul weather planning, first aid emergencies, navigation, food management, et.
- Form positive relationships with campers to promote growth, confidence, social development, and excellent role-modelling
In-Camp Responsibilities
- Supervise a tent or cabin group of campers in all aspects of camp life including: Keeping track of personal belongings and maintaining good personal hygiene Keeping personal and shared space tidy and clean Reporting to activities, meals, and other assembly points on time Practicing positive social interactions amongst all campers
- Supervise and lead camp activities as assigned by Program Director
- Perform occasional maintenance tasks as assigned
- Participate in all staff meetings and staff training sessions
- Contribute as needed to a positive, safe, and fun camp community
