Hybrid Working

We work on a hybrid basis, splitting time between our Toronto office on University Avenue, our homes and client sites, depending on business needs.

About the role

Due to continued growth, we are hiring a rail testing and commissioning professional to join our team in Canada on a permanent full-time basis as a Managing Consultant – Testing & Commissioning.

As a hands-on consultant, you will play a key role in the delivery of high-quality advice and solutions across complex rail projects and advisory commissions in Canada.

In this role, you will travel to Edmonton for several days each month to work on-site with our client. For the rest of your time, you will split your time between our Toronto office and your home.

This is an exciting opportunity to join NRC and play a key role in delivering complex rail projects and advisory services in Canada. You will work closely with clients and colleagues to provide practical expertise, solve complex challenges and help deliver high-quality outcomes across a range of programmes.

You will also work alongside experienced rail professionals from around the world, including Network Rail colleagues on secondment from the UK, gaining insight from one of the world’s most established railway systems across major projects.

Key Accountabilities

In this role, you can expect to be doing the following:

  • Build trusted relationships with clients, delivery partners, operators and technical stakeholders, turning complex testing and commissioning issues into clear decisions and practical actions.
  • Develop testing and commissioning strategies, plans, integrated schedules, procedures and acceptance arrangements that support safe and successful programme delivery.
  • Define test scope, sequencing, dependencies, resources, access requirements and acceptance criteria, with clear ownership and auditable evidence throughout.
  • Coordinate testing across design, construction, systems integration, safety assurance, operations, maintenance, suppliers and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Review designs, requirements and technical submissions to confirm systems are testable, traceable and ready for verification, validation and acceptance.
  • Lead and assure factory, site, static, dynamic, integration, performance and operational testing across integrated railway systems.
  • Oversee test readiness, safe systems of work, configuration, results, defects and close-out, supporting trial running, operational readiness, handover and entry into service.
  • Lead consultancy proposals and assignments, managing scope, deliverables, resources, programme, costs and risks while delivering to agreed quality, timescales and budget.

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, you will typically demonstrate the following:

  • A relevant degree, professional qualification or equivalent practical expertise in railway engineering, systems, testing and commissioning or a related discipline.
  • Substantial testing and commissioning experience on passenger rail, metro or light rail programmes, including work in live or operational railway environments.
  • Practical experience developing and delivering testing and commissioning strategies, plans, procedures, integrated schedules and acceptance evidence.
  • Strong knowledge of systems integration, requirements management, verification and validation, configuration management, safety assurance and technical acceptance.
  • Experience coordinating testing across railway disciplines such as signalling and train control, communications, traction power, rolling stock, track, stations and operational systems.
  • The ability to manage test readiness, access, permits, safe systems of work, interfaces, defects, test records and close-out activities.
  • Strong consultancy, stakeholder and communication skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively and explain complex technical matters clearly.
  • Experience leading assignments and multidisciplinary teams; Canadian transit experience, brownfield commissioning, operational readiness or relevant professional registration would be advantageous.
