CBC News is looking for an exceptional editorial program leader for , our flagship audio current affairs program that shapes the national conversation and amplifies the voices that define our time. This is a full-time temporary role for nine months, behind a leave. The job is based in Toronto.

YOUR ROLE

You’ll be leading a team of accomplished journalists who go beyond the news - uncovering the human stories behind the headlines, challenging the status quo and driving the cultural and political discourse in Canada.

The successful candidate will be a creative thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of their decision-making, shaping content that plays equally well as a podcast as it does on terrestrial radio. You bring a deep knowledge of narrative storytelling and immersive sound design. You are at the leading edge of changing audience consumption trends on audio and in digital spaces. You identify stories that can be shared across CBC News owned and operated apps, YouTube and TikTok with a focus on reaching our audiences on their mobile devices.

You will oversee our daily coverage decisions and be the go-to person on journalistic policy and judgement. You have experience leading teams covering all aspects of journalism, from breaking news to deep-dive investigative projects. You have a keen knowledge of legal and ethical risk management. You value the service of a public broadcaster and ensure all of our work adheres to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, upholding our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity.

You’ll approach your work with an open mind and a genuine curiosity that encourages experimentation and leads to transformative change. You’ll be comfortable challenging assumptions and seeking out a variety of perspectives to better reflect our audiences.

You’re a strategic thinker who sets direction and delegates effectively. You react decisively to major developments, track stories in real time and reshape shows on the fly to ensure our audiences are getting the content they need to know. You understand that the demands of a daily program can be a flat-out sprint to deadline with a myriad of complex decisions to make along the way, so organizational skills are key.

You have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences and consider those in programming decisions. You live and promote the values of inclusion and create a respectful work culture.

You support and develop your team through mentoring and meaningful, constructive feedback.

You’re a leader who is excited to show up to work knowing anything can happen on their watch, thrives when news breaks, and is at their best when navigating change.

At CBC News we value collaboration, with your team and with CBC News colleagues and as such you’ll be required to be on-site at the Toronto Broadcast Centre weekdays. Your daily schedule will be determined by production needs. You can expect some early mornings, late evenings or overtime in this role.
