Job Overview
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, analytical, consultative and results driven technical professional to join our team in the role of Model Developer at our downtown Toronto location.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Model Development & Analytics, the Model Developer will build and enhance best-in-class electricity market models and use analytical tools to ensure the efficient, reliable, and affordable generation of low-carbon electricity in Ontario. The models include but are not limited to: electricity demand forecasting, optimization of power system planning, simulation of electricity generation and transmission, and forecast of electricity prices, fuel consumptions and emissions, generation revenues and profit margins. Other applications include building and enhancing analytical tools and software systems to address portfolio optimization problems such as water management in hydroelectric generation, fuel procurement, and bidding strategies implementation.
Key Accountabilities
- Develop and enhance tools that support OPG Commercial Operations in implementing bidding strategies in the IESO-administered electricity market.
- Gather business requirements, design data structures, develop Windows desktop applications, build, deploy, and maintain Web APIs in the Azure cloud environment.
- Develop, validate, maintain and enhance electricity market simulation models to reflect changing system conditions, market rules, and policy developments.
- Improve simulation model accuracy, usability, productivity, and calibrate models by reconciling model results against observed market outcomes.
- Develop and enhance models for optimizing long-term electricity system expansion, utilizing state-of-the-art modelling techniques, optimization tools, and algorithms.
- Develop, calibrate, and maintain long-term electricity demand forecasting models; conduct analytical studies on key drivers of electricity demand, including weather, emerging technologies, government policies, and conservation programs.
- Use quantitative analysis and modelling to assess strategic initiatives, business development opportunities, market rule changes, and government policies; communicate findings to stakeholders and maintain awareness of industry and methodological developments.
- Identify, evaluate, and implement opportunities to leverage AI, machine learning, and other emerging technologies across model development, system planning, forecasting, and commercial analytics.
Qualifications
- Completion of a four-year university degree in a relevant discipline, supplemented by at least one additional year of specialized study or equivalent advanced education.
- A minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in electricity markets, power systems, energy modelling, quantitative analysis, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience using analytical and development tools such as MATLAB, Visual Studio $C# and/or VB.NET$, SQL and NoSQL databases, as well as Microsoft Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, to manage large data sets and solve complex optimization problems.
- Experience applying quantitative and numerical methods to modelling, analysis, and decision-making; experience with competitive power-market risk analysis and/or power-sector portfolio optimization is preferred.
- Strong understanding of electrical-system fundamentals, generation and supply options, physical power-system operations, optimization, electricity market rules, market dynamics, market behaviour, and economic principles.
- Ability to apply technical and market knowledge to develop and improve electricity-market models, analytical tools, and commercial decision-support solutions.
- Ability to build knowledge of OPG’s business, the competitive electricity marketplace, and the relationship between market conditions and OPG’s trading activities.

OPG is committed to employment equity. As such, we encourage applicants from equity-seeking communities (Indigenous Peoples, racialized persons, persons with disabilities, and women).
