Job Overview
Kensington Health Research Institute is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician to join its research team to support the laboratory work. The successful candidate will provide technical and operational laboratory support for preclinical and clinical research, including ocular sample collection, biobank organization, sample processing, molecular and biochemical assays, immunohistochemistry, and related documentation. The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on laboratory experience, excellent organizational and documentation skills, and the ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative, hospital-based research environment.
Responsibilities
Perform ELISA and other biochemical or analytical laboratory assays in support of active research studies.
Collect, receive, prepare, label, process, and track ocular and biological samples for downstream analyses.
Support biobank organization, inventory tracking, sample storage, and retrieval according to institutional procedures.
Process tissues for cryostat sectioning and perform high-quality cryostat sectioning.
Conduct immunostaining, immunofluorescence, and related microscopy-based workflows.
Maintain accurate laboratory records, experimental documentation, and study-related logs.
Develop, update, and follow standard operating procedures as new research studies are initiated.
Assist with laboratory organization, inventory management, equipment readiness, and quality control activities.
Support multiple concurrent research projects while meeting timelines and study requirements.
Follow institutional laboratory safety, privacy, quality, and research compliance standards.
Qualifications
Required Skills and Abilities:
Strong attention to detail, documentation practices, organizational skills, and ability to follow established procedures.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research environment with multiple concurrent projects.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
Hands-on experience performing ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, or other related analytical laboratory assays.
Experience with biological or ocular sample handling, sample processing, and/or biobank-related workflows.
Experience with tissue processing and cryostat sectioning.
Experience with epifluorescence microscopy.
Experience with confocal microscopy.
Experience with digital image analysis (ImageJ/Fiji or similar).
Previous experience in an academic, hospital-based, or translational research laboratory, particularly in ophthalmology research and ocular tissue processing, will be considered a strong asset.
Required Professional Designation/Certificate:
Completion of a college diploma or bachelor’s degree in biotechnology, laboratory technology, biomedical sciences, biology, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant laboratory experience.
