Senior Consultant – Environment

(Full-time/Permanent)

(Hybrid)

Suslop Inc. is seeking a talented senior consultant to join our dynamic and growing team to contribute to various projects with a focus on socio-economic development. As a consultant at Suslop Inc., you will play an instrumental role in supporting Indigenous nations, multiple levels of government, and a range of organizations in projects that aim to advance sustainable development goals. Specifically, you will:

· Help plan, organize, and implement projects that may directly impact Indigenous nations and their socio-economic wellbeing; and

· Work closely with clients to develop comprehensive solutions to complex challenges.


Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to diverse, short-term research and engagement projects while supporting the planning, development, and implementation of policy and research in support of our ongoing long-term projects with clients and partners.


In this multi-faceted role, you will be responsible for developing and delivering research projects, manage aspects of environmental and impact assessments, and contribute to socio-economic assessments and stakeholder engagement strategies. Responsibilities include:


· Collaborating with colleagues and clients to develop methods, models, detailed work plans, researchable questions, and quantitative and qualitative research tools;

· Reviewing technical draft documents related to environmental assessments, permit applications, and related regulatory processes federally and provincially;

· Undertaking in-depth desktop reviews of current and relative literature, data sources, tools, policies, plans, programs and legislative frameworks;

· Undertaking field work including engagement of stakeholders and/or rightsholders using a participatory approach;

· Participating in primary research including surveys, telephone and in-depth interviews, workshops, and focus groups to collect information on socio-economic conditions;

· Conducting research (collect information on key baseline indicators, variables, parameters and modelling and analyzing the information) and writing reports that can be components of project assessment;

· Working with clients and project teams to develop, deliver and assure ESG goals, outcomes and strategies in order to drive sustainable solutions that achieve positive outcomes for local stakeholders/rightsholders;

· Keeping records for engagement and consultation activities; and

· Providing solutions-based advice to team members and clients focusing on socio-economic issues.



Qualifications

As part of a growing and agile business, our team is looking for a consultant with a broad range of experience, which must include working with Indigenous Peoples and a minimum of 7 years of experience in one or more of the following areas:

· Regulatory processes

· Environmental assessment

· Baseline data collection, technical report writing and review

· Consultation and engagement

· Natural resources management

· Infrastructure planning and development

· Crown-Indigenous relations


A bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to one of the following areas is required: biology, environmental science, biochemistry, environmental engineering, water resource science or engineering, or similar studies in natural sciences. Preference will be given to qualified candidates with a graduate degree and a Registered Professional Planner (RPP) designation.


Other beneficial areas or knowledge and/or experience include: Duty to Consult and Accommodate; Indigenous Knowledge collection; corporate social responsibility; and community benefit agreements.


Skills

Essential skills for this position include:

· Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills;

· Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact across a broad range of audiences and technical backgrounds, including internal and external clients, stakeholders, rightsholders, and regulatory agencies;

· Strong leadership skills;

· Strong strategic thinking and creative problem-solving skills;

· Strong research skills including an understanding of quantitative and qualitative research methods with in-depth knowledge of one of the two;

· Ability to work collaboratively with the team to manage project schedules to help ensure that deliverables are met in a timely manner;

· Ability to work independently without supervision;

· Familiarity with analytical methods used to support or conduct environmental assessments;

· Familiarity with undertaking jurisdictional/environmental scans and SWOT analysis;

· Familiarity with Canadian history, legislation, and policies relating to Indigenous Peoples; and

· High proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Workspace.

· Willingness and ability to travel, up to 25% of the time; and

· A valid driver’s license and the ability to rent and drive a car and travel on public transport when available.

Location

The position is hybrid. While it is preferred that the successful candidate will work on-site in the downtown Toronto office one day per week, there is sufficient flexibility so that candidates with the right experience who are not Greater Toronto Area based, will still be considered and would be able to work remotely.


Salary Range

This is a full-time, permanent position. The starting salary range is from $90,000 to $130,000 based on level of experience, plus benefits and an annual bonus for meeting performance goals.
