About The EarlyON Child & Family Centre

Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Early Childhood Studies prepares students for a range of careers working with young children and their families, as well as in the areas of early childhood research and policy. In partnership with the School of Early Childhood Studies and the City of Toronto Children's Services Division, Every Child Belongs Program, the TMU Childhood Resource Consultation (RC) Program, works together with families, child care/home child care program teams, and specialized professionals to share information about goals, strategies, services, training, and resources. Planning and goal setting begin from the view of the child/children, considering their skills, interests, well-being, and the diversity of the family, home, and community. The RC provides information as well as coaching of strategies to help develop the skills of others. Working together to build partnerships with community and service provider agencies. The RC provides an opportunity for feedback and formal evaluation of the services provided on a regular basis or at the completion of the service request. Our programs work in collaboration with other health and social service providers and program participants to meet the needs of our families by ensuring equitable, diverse, and inclusive service.

Working Environment

The incumbent will spend time in both an early learning environment and an office environment. Travel to in-town caseload sites will be required. A Presto Card will be provided for TTC travel to caseload sites. May periodically be exposed to undesirable and disagreeable conditions such as loud noise, outdoor weather conditions, and unpleasant odors.

The Opportunity

We Are Looking For a Resource Consultant To Provide Consultation Services To Licensed Child Care And Home Child Care Programs In The City Of Toronto, Including The TMU Early Learning Centre. A Resource Consultant With The TMU Childhood Resource Consultation Program

  • Assists in building their capacity to support children by reducing barriers and facilitating participation in a variety of offered services.
  • Works collaboratively with child and family program staff, and interdisciplinary teams to create tailored support plans reflecting the diversity of each child’s family, home and community.
  • Participates in, researches and provides support to students to further their development in understanding the importance of inclusion, diversity, and equity within the field of early learning and care.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with programs, interdisciplinary teams and community partners to support children and families by working with families, child care program staff and specialized professionals (e.g., speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, etc.) to provide individual consultation services.
  • Builds and maintains collaborative partnerships with community agencies and service providers, including coordinating referrals and ongoing communications to support the collaborative practice between community partners, the early learning and care program providers and families.
  • Creates and provides training to support early learning and child care programs to advance inclusive practices when providing support to community child care program staff within caseload, including TMU’s Registered Early Childhood Educators, to build knowledge around creating inclusive environments for children.
  • Contributes to research, teaching and mentoring in the School of Early Childhood Studies by collaborating with the TMU community (e.g., ECS students, faculty advisors, faculty members, and at Professional Development gatherings).

Qualifications

To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume describing how you meet the following required qualifications:

  • Completion of a post-secondary degree program in Early Childhood Studies or a related discipline with evidence of professional expertise relevant to the Resource Consultant role. This might include the completion of a Resource Consultant certificate, completing university or college-based coursework focused on the knowledge and skills of the Resource Consultant, and/or field experience working with interdisciplinary teams to support children’s inclusion. Registered member of the Ontario College of Early Childhood Educators and in good standing
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience working with children and families with the following requirements:
    • Proven knowledge of teaching practices and methods related to Early Childhood Education;
    • Familiarity with, or strong demonstrated interest in, current scholarly research in early childhood education and related fields. This includes experience with, or evidence of skills to, contribute to a laboratory school program. Evidence of administrative and consultation-related skills (e.g., daily documenting of children’s learning, sharing assessment outcomes with professionals, communicating with families, centres and interdisciplinary professionals);
    • Knowledge of the College of Early Childhood Educators Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice;
    • Knowledge of the Ministry of Education’s Child Care and Early Years Act;
    • Knowledge of the current Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto early learning documents.
  • Equivalent experience or a combination of equivalent experience and education may be accepted in place of education.
  • A criminal reference/vulnerable sector check, Standard First Aid and CPR (Level C), and up-to-date immunizations and a TB test are required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working professionally, showing a commitment to dialogue and feedback as it applies to both continual professional learning and meaningful program support.
  • Superior written, oral, and interpersonal skills to liaise professionally with internal and external community members, including families and students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience with principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills, along with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency using MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Calendar, etc.).
