Job description

Waste to Resource Ontario (W2RO) is a voluntary member-based association with over 220 organizations across the province including private sector companies, public sector municipalities, and organizations and individuals involved in the waste management and recycling sector in Ontario.

Together they manage over 85% of the province’s waste and 90% of the province’s recycling.W2RO members have diverse interests and capital investments in areas such as waste and recycling collection, landfills, energy from waste, transfer stations, material recovery facilities, organics processing and composting, and hazardous waste from both a recycling and disposal perspective.

W2RO has been an active stakeholder in the development and implementation of waste, recycling, and resource recovery regulatory initiatives at all levels of government – federal, provincial and municipal as we look to advance our five advocacy pillars:

  • Solving Ontario’s Landfill Capacity Crisis
  • Collaborating for Sustainable and Best-in-class EPR programs for all Ontarians
  • Continuing Red Tape Reduction to Ensure Ontario Remains Open for Business
  • Maximizing Resource and Energy Recovery to Strengthen Ontario’s Economy
  • Unlocking the Industry by Working for Workers and Businesses in Ontario

Position Overview

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Research Analyst is responsible for supporting policy research and development projects with quantitative research design and analysis. The Research Analyst plays a pivotal role within the Policy & Government Relations Team, leading research on key policy files, as well as providing support on a range of strategic priorities.

The ideal candidate has an interest in public policy, strong data analysis skills, qualitative and quantitative research experience, and an ability to formulate and communicate insights on complex policy issues.

The role supports evidence-based decision-making while supporting W2RO’s strategic plan and objectives in collaboration with a diverse membership.

Knowledge of the waste management and recycling sector is an asset but is not a requirement.

The Research Analyst is responsible for several core functions, but not limited to:

  • Conduct research and environmental scans to support technical committee discussions, strategic planning, advocacy activities, and member engagement.
  • Gather, clean, and organize waste sector data exclusively from secondary sources, including government databases, voluntary member data collection, corporate sustainability reports, and academic literature.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses across a variety of policy areas analysis to advance evidence-based sector positions, policy development and advocacy.
  • Engage with stakeholders to better understand challenges and develop innovative and actionable solutions
  • Prepare policy briefs, position papers, fact sheets and messaging through member bulletins, social media and W2RO’s website, ensuring members are kept apprised of developments and issues.
  • Synthesize research into impactful, action-oriented presentations and reports to share internally and externally.
  • Support W2RO’s internal volunteer technical committees, working groups and action plans as required.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Data Analytics, Environmental Economics, Statistics, or a related discipline.
  • 1-3 years of hands-on experience in quantitative and qualitative research, data analysis, or market intelligence with academic research, environmental data tracking, or non-profit internships is preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced formulas, data manipulation, pivot tables, modeling) and database management is required.
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping software or data analysis and visualization tools such as SQL, R, Power BI, or SPSS is a strong asset.
  • Ability to critically evaluate information, identify data discrepancies, and draw logical, evidence-based conclusions.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to turn raw data and technical scientific findings into easily understood facts and narratives for the general public and media.

The Association offers some flexibility in working environment with interesting and challenging opportunities in the research, policy development and government relations field, as well as involvement, as a team member, in the wide variety of activities of a small, dynamic office group.

The office location is in Etobicoke, Ontario and the position requires some flexibility in working hours, and some travel inside Ontario.
