Job description

The Director of Construction leads and manages a team of Senior Project Managers and Project Managers to deliver exceptional results for our clients. Reporting to the President and CEO, the Director holds overall management direction for all divisional functions, including responsibility for the profit and loss of the organizational units. This is a hands-on leadership role, with the expectation to guide the design and planning of work, coach and develop the project team, and set the standard for safety, quality, and financial performance across the division.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Project Managers, Coordinators, Administrators, and site employees to consistently deliver on-time, on-budget results for clients.
  • Provide overall management direction for divisional functions, including profit-and-loss responsibility, and assist in hiring, developing, and delegating authority to key staff.
  • Coach and develop team members, building capability across the group.
  • Engage regularly and positively with all site employees, leading by example on safety.
  • Maintain a complete, current knowledge of the status of all active projects.
  • Plan, direct, and evaluate projects from start to finish against schedule, specifications, and budget, maintaining current knowledge of all active work.
  • Manage internal team, vendors, partners, contractors, and all other external stakeholders to keep projects on time and on budget, monitoring quality, quantity, material, and manpower.
  • Identify and track schedule delays, stacking of trades, out-of-sequence work, and other risks.
  • Support the permitting process required for successful project completion, providing inputs to ensure compliance with local regulations and permit requirements
  • Manage the financial aspects of contracts, including budgets, costs, tools, and resources.
  • Ensure that billings are current before the contract’s due date.
  • Review and provide final approval of vendor invoices in coordination with the Project Manager.
  • Interface with the executive team, Financial Manager, and Accounts Receivable Supervisor.
  • Prepare for, attend, and contribute to monthly financial meetings.
  • Mitigate any loss arising from internal or external parties.
  • Coordinate RFx activities and evaluate and recommend project vendors, general contractors, and EPC contractors.
  • Administer and oversee contracts with the General Contractor and major equipment vendors, including parental guarantees, letters of credit, and performance and supply bonds.
  • Prepare contracts and negotiate revisions, changes, and additions.
  • Initiate change requests and communicate with the project controls team on vendor requests.
  • Monitor and control project risks; develop, track, and resolve mitigation measures, and incorporate learnings into subsequent project delivery.
  • Oversee testing, electrical compliance studies, and other required vendor reports; coordinate vendor support, including inspection and monitoring of electrical installation.
  • Review QA/QC analytics reports, discuss outcomes with clients, and continuously improve firm and vendor performance.
  • Direct the purchase of building materials.
  • Ensure compliance with project contract documents.
  • Develop and implement quality control programs.
  • Review and contribute to project analytics reports provided by the internal QA/QC group, and hold subsequent discussions with clients to review those reports.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to improve firm and vendor performance, supported by regular executive reviews.
  • Coordinate efforts with other departments as required.
  • Consult with the general contractor and/or owner/operator as needed.
  • Prepare progress reports and issue progress schedules to clients.
  • Prepare for, attend, and contribute to weekly executive management meetings, discussing collaborative challenges and wins that affect the overall success of the organization.
  • Provide department update meetings on a bi-weekly basis and participate in quarterly superintendent and foreman meetings.
  • Submit weekly Project Manager reports.
  • Contribute to the company's mission and strategic direction through policies and concrete objectives, met through effective management of human, financial, and material resources.
  • Represent the organization, or delegate representatives to act on its behalf, in negotiations, union matters, and other official functions.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

  • 15 years of experience in electrical construction management.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
  • Completed technical education and/or a degree relating to the field.
  • Knowledge of one-line drawings, elementary and wiring diagrams, and equipment specifications (including transformers, MCC, switchgear, and substation equipment); power plans, conduit plans, cable schedules, system studies, and protective relay settings.
  • Knowledge, interpretation, and application of the Canadian Electrical Code, National Electrical Code, and Canadian construction safety code.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).
  • Ability to interface with all levels of staff in a professional manner.

TRAVEL:

  • 50 - 80 % travel may be required for this position.
