Note: This is a temporary position ending on June 4 2027. You would be filling in for the permanent manager of Southwestern Ontario. This is a hybrid position and the successful candidate can be located in Windsor Hamilton London Toronto or Kitchener-Waterloo.

We are looking for an interim Managing Editor of Southwestern Ontario to lead four teams in southwestern Ontario Windsor London Kitchener-Waterloo as well as Hamilton including our bureau in Niagara Region. These teams provide a daily news service on a variety of platforms including live morning and afternoon audio programming for these cities and surrounding communities one live video news program and ongoing digital coverage.

The Managing Editor is the senior journalistic leader and drives the local editorial strategy for these stations. This person will develop implement and oversee objectives with measurable outcomes for each station. They will have oversight over local daily news pilots live and on-demand coverage community outreach and news specials ensuring theyre serving the needs of the people who live and work in their respective communities. This person will also collaborate with other leaders and units across CBC to maximize the impact of our journalism.

The ideal candidate is a strategic leader who is laser-focused on audience needs and has a proven track record of driving change. This person is a creative thinker whos eager to rise to the challenges of an ever-changing media landscape and inspires others to a permanently adaptive approach to the work that they do.

The Managing Editor executes strategies for building meaningful relationships with new audiences with an emphasis on growing the 35-49 demographic through journalism centred on their needs and the realities of the communities in which they live and work. They will lead change in each station pushing teams to adapt their work to meet the evolving needs of a diverse and growing populace.

The Managing Editor will hire inspire mentor support and develop staff ensuring their teams like the communities they serve reflect a wide range of experiences and perspectives. The Managing Editor is fully committed to reflecting the growing cultural diversity of the region and building meaningful relationships with people in a range of communities in ways that are relevant to them. key demographics in a range of communities.

The Managing Editor will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories and our programs are fair balanced accurate thoughtful and intelligent.

This leader is also the point person for matters outside of journalism working with partners in other departments to address issues as they arise including maintenance security and technical issues. While not responsible for solving these problems the leader helps ensure solutions are sought in a timely manner.

Experience required:

  • Minimum of 10 years related leadership experience including experience leading a newsroom.
  • Proven leadership and management skills during periods of significant change.
  • A track record of guiding complex journalistic decision making.
  • Experience leading the application of journalistic standards and practices in a daily newsroom setting and an understanding of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP).
  • Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and digital is important.
  • Strong understanding of media trends and implications for CBC News and local journalism
  • Proven ability to make decisions rapidly and frequently within tight deadlines.
  • Experience leading a news team during major breaking news events.
  • Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and journalism.
  • Experience hiring and supporting new staff in a journalism setting.
  • Some experience working with video and/or audio storytelling is essential.
  • Experience managing teams remotely is essential.

Tasks:

  • Provides strategically driven editorial leadership daily and on all projects.
  • Responsible for application of CBCs journalistic standards and practices.
  • Works closely with legal team when required.
  • Develops local partnerships and develops community outreach strategies.
  • Develops and executes strategy against the goals.
  • Builds and maintains strong connections between the local teams and colleagues across the country to the benefit of CBC as a whole.
  • Works with MEs and other colleagues across the country to achieve strategic goals.
  • Leads and formulates plans to broaden and deepen community relationships.
  • Ensures that all CBC policies and procedures are followed.
  • Answers complaints to the CBC Ombudsman.
  • Works with finance staff to ensure costs are tracked and budgets are followed.
  • Hires and supports the training and development of all staff.
  • Helps station executive producers troubleshoot site issues as needed.
  • Must travel to stations as required.
  • Proven ability to set news strategy and create the conditions necessary for success.
  • Proven ability to make decisions rapidly and frequently to tight deadlines.
  • Strong analytical skills to solve complex journalistic and operational issues.
  • Ensures all content complies with CBC Journalistic Policy
  • Ensures stations deliver compelling content that reflects community diversity.
  • Manages special programming: town halls forums specials holiday events enterprise series investigative projects etc.
  • Monitors published content to ensure accuracy immediacy and integrity.
  • Accountable for editorial matters HR and financial management.
  • Represents resource needs to the network and manages budgets.
