Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit including GO Expansion Light Rail Transit routes and major expansions to Torontos subway system to get people where they need to go better faster and easier. In Engineering & Asset Management we play a key role in ensuring the safe reliable and cost-effective service of our transit system as the Metrolinx engineering technical authority and owner of more than $20 billion in assets and growing to $60 billion by 2030.

Our Facilities Architecture and Engineering Office is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to provide in-house mechanical engineering project scope concept and preliminary design services mechanical design review assistance on all projects in the Engineering Office and to coordinate the design and construction of assigned physical infrastructure mechanical projects in a safe timely consistent and cost-effective manner.

What will I be doing

  • Preparing in-house building and related facility mechanical engineering concept plans preparatory to consultant assignments for assigned Engineering Office projects including feasibility and budget studies to define project scope.
  • Reviewing consultant designs in terms of mechanical and overall design compatibility and consistency for all Engineering Office projects including tenant projects.
  • Managing assigned mechanical engineering projects and providing information to the assigned Project Manager through all stages of design and construction
  • Identifying developing and recommending physical infrastructure programs with respect to rehabilitation and expansion of all GO Transit mechanical facilities.
  • Researching developing and recommending GO Transit engineering mechanical and maintenance standards and procedures and technical training requirements for new technology as a result of capital works.
  • Provides in-house mechanical engineering concept and preliminary design services and design review of all Engineering Office projects to ensure the integration of mechanical design with structural architectural electrical communications and all other relevant design aspects.
  • Plans manages and oversees the work of mechanical engineering consultants to ensure compliance with GO Transits Engineering Standards Building Code and Site Plan Control Requirements and internal user group requirements through all project stages such as project studies design proposals design reports sustainable development reports accessibility reports contract documents and drawings and construction administration.
  • Visits and inspects GO Transit facilities with user groups and identifying required mechanical rehabilitation and expansion work based on life expectancy and/or current customer demand.
  • Coordinates the proposed mechanical engineering projects with external agencies including the Railways to ensure compliance with legislation codes and the requirements of governing/regulatory authorities including the incorporation of external agency work within GO Engineering Projects.
  • Reviews tender document specifications for construction and consultant contracts assists Procurement and Contract Services during the tendering by providing direction to Contractors and Consultants on questions arising during tendering.
  • Ensures proper acceptance and commissioning of completed projects for hand over to the user groups.
  • Defines researches develops and recommends GO Transit Engineering Mechanical Standards and procedures for improved physical infrastructure.
  • Designs and coordinates in-house mechanical projects and emergent rehabilitation/repair work for other user groups and coordinates tenant and landlord mechanical work as defined in the Tenant Manuals.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need

  • A Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized University or an equivalent combination of education training and experience providing a thorough knowledge of the theories and practices of mechanical engineering.
  • Must successfully complete environmental safety and any other training required by corporate policy. Ability to obtain job related certifications as required.
  • Minimum Five (5) years experience related to the planning design and construction of site and building mechanical systems interpreting and applying contract plans and specifications and co-ordinating contracted mechanical engineering projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theory principles and practices of mechanical engineering as pertains to sites and buildings particularly HVAC boilers plumbing storm drainage systems sprinkler/fire suppression systems elevators fuel storage oil traps snow-melting systems noise/vibration heat reclamation energy conservation remote monitoring/controls etc.
  • Detailed knowledge of project management including cost control scheduling scheduling codes standards specifications corporate policies and procedures and applicable contract legislation. Thorough understanding of Railway Rules and Regulations and Safety and Operating procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills ability to work independently strong interpersonal and negotiating skills and analytical ability are a must. Proficiency in the use of project management software and computer applications is essential.
  • Researches defines and recommends new design standards or procedures to conform with up-to-date materials and methods of construction manufacturing techniques workplace ergonomics and revised regulatory requirements such as sustainable development energy conservation and workplace hazardous materials storage/disposal.

Working Conditions:

Regular site visits and contractor shop visits are required during working hours and occasional visits during evenings weekends and/or holidays. Site visits may involve climbing ladders and scaffolding and exposure to inclement weather.
