Location: Saskatchewan/Alberta/Manitoba/Ontario (where our offices are located) -

This role is eligible for hybrid work – this means you’ll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office, on a scheduled rotation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the implementation of corporate claims strategies that are anchored in customer experience and aligned to strategic direction for property portfolio.

In this role, you will develop and implement governance, policy, processes, standards, reporting and monitoring of claims functions. In addition, you will develop and implement best practices and continuous improvement to support corporate priorities of operational excellence and sustainable growth while maintaining a national focus.

Corporate insurance focuses on research, data, competitive intelligence, and industry best practice to set strategy and standards and works in tandem with operational areas to drive strategic execution, opportunities, shareholder value, and customer & partner experience.

Key Accountabilities

Corporate Claims Strategies & Implementation

  • Develops and implements Corporate Claims strategies, best practices, performance standards and procedures, including development of change management plans.

  • Collaborates with Claims Operations to understand training requirements and provides input into training strategies.

  • Collaborates with claims operations leadership teams and other internal and external partners in the development and implementation of effective and consistent claims handling models of all lines in all regions.

  • Supports the development and implementation of corporate transformation initiatives.

  • Leads research and analysis related to corporate claims handling initiatives or efficiencies and provides strategy recommendations from findings.

  • Partners and collaborates with Claims Operations to solicit and share feedback, develops strategies and tactics to address concerns, ensuring impact of changes include consideration beyond immediate area to improve claims handling processes.

  • Identifies opportunities and risks associated with changes in technology, considering the potential impact on claims operations; communicates, facilitates, and supports the necessary changes for continuous improvement.

  • Collaborates with Corp Claims Management to ensures an effective audit program is in place to monitor the quality and efficiency of claims handling processes and compliance to internal claims standards.

  • Manages and prioritize the intake process for, operational and cross functional initiatives; from intake to implementation; ensuring all relevant business partners are included in the process.

  • Ensures enhancements and changes have incorporated a change assessment to determine best course of action for implementation.

Corporate Claims Relationships

  • Collaborates with regional claims leadership to ensure processes and standards are followed related to claims handling and settlement negotiations involving claim financials, complex recovery matters, denials, coverage, evaluation, and legal referrals.

  • Conducts branch visits to develop an effective working relationship between operations staff and Corporate Claims.

  • Participates on steering committees in relation to the development and/or enhancement of insurance products to ensure strategic alignment with claims practices.

  • Collaborates with Corp Claims teams and other areas of the organization (Legal, Product Management, Corp Analytics, BRM’s) to ensure alignment with claims strategies and impacts to claims handling standards and procedures are considered.

Corporate Claims Standardization & Quality Assurance

  • Leads the development and implementation of a national claims standards program to establish consistent and standard approaches to claims management across all regions.

  • Leads in the establishment and monitoring of national claims process workflows to standardize and optimize workflow of operations and partners, automation and workload optimization & planning, claims process maps for all transaction types, and customer experience.

  • Executes and monitors the quality assurance program to ensure claims policies and guidelines are effectively executed, training needs are identified and acted upon and customer expectations are reflected.

  • Monitors changes in the insurance industry as it relates to regulations, claims handling and best practices.

People Leadership

  • Builds a high performing workforce by actively leading human resource activities.

  • Ensures development of divisional succession plans.

  • Builds a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies, ensuring integration with and management of employee performance development and career development plans.

  • Drives performance through team members and is committed to leadership development across the company, supporting employees and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities.

Corporate Management

  • Ensures programs and policies are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.

  • Manages risk in area of authority.

  • Prepares, reviews, manages and/or approves departmental/divisional budgets.

  • Prepares decision requests, decision and/or information items and/or SGI board items.

  • Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility, including development, implementation and managing of program components specific to departmental health and safety requirements.

  • Makes decisions for departmental operations that are efficient, effective and in alignment with strategic direction and priorities.

  • Ensures department and program policies, procedures and guidelines are in compliance with applicable federal and provincial legislation and regulations; implements and evaluates changes to legislation and regulations in area of authority.

  • Establishes and maintains an effective system of internal controls to support reliable financial reporting and compliance in accordance with applicable laws and regulations within the span of control and communicates the importance of internal controls to staff

Education and Experience

  • A four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Business, Mathematics & Applied Science or Social Sciences.

  • Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation or Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP).

  • Ten years’ experience comprised of 6 years leadership and 4 years’ experience in a technical insurance role.

  • 4-years combined personal and commercial lines property-casualty claims & property estimating-valuation experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of personal lines home, commercial lines & agri- business operations and coverages in Canada and allied resources to support the claims processes.

  • Knowledge of personal and commercial property-casualty claims handling methods across Canada.

  • Knowledge of first party coverages, legislations, regulatory bodies, court decisions and delivery models across Canada.

  • Knowledge of home & commercial repair, replacement, construction, estimating & valuation.

  • Ability to collaborate and build support to drive change.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of insurance.

  • Knowledge of the insurance industry, products, and competitors.

  • Knowledge of claims policies and procedures related to the adjustment and settlement of claims.

  • Knowledge of organizational units and how they interact to support the corporation’s operations.

  • Ability to understand and leverage data from multiple sources to drive decision making.

  • Ability to analyze and research complex issues or opportunities until resolved.

  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and techniques required to plan, manage, and execute projects.

  • Ability to write high-quality reports that are clear, concise, and targeted to the audience.

  • Ability to prepare and deliver effective presentations.
