Overview

We are seeking a hands-on builder: a practical architect who prioritizes active coding and functional reference implementations over drafting strategy decks. If you view architecture as the hands-on practice of aligning technology, data, and processes, and you thrive on collaborating closely with developers to deliver results, we want you on our team.

Your Opportunity

We are seeking a Solutions Architect to establish and own solution and technical architecture across our technology portfolio. This is a permanent, senior technical role within our IT Solutions team, created to close a structural capability gap: as our portfolio of custom applications, integrations, and automation grows, we need a dedicated owner for architectural decisions, standards, and technical direction.

In this role, you will be deeply integrated within a 10-member software development team by actively reviewing technical specifications, developing prototypes, and delivering highly functional designs tailored for immediate development. You will own our data architecture, define our automation framework, and act as the team's focal point for complex integration and design challenges.

This permanent, full-time hybrid arrangement requires working on-site at least three days a week. While our technology team is primarily based in London, Ontario, our community spans all 25 of Dillon’s Canadian offices, and we welcome candidates to work from any of them.

About Dillon

Dillon Consulting Limited (Dillon) is a proudly Canadian, 100% employee-owned professional consulting firm specializing in planning, engineering, environmental science, and management. With over 25 offices and more than 1100 employees across Canada, we offer a wide range of services related to building and improving facilities and infrastructure, protecting the environment, and developing communities.

At Dillon, we strive to remain at the forefront of technology and innovation and thrive on interdisciplinary collaboration, empowering our people to challenge conventional thinking and build careers focused on creating a lasting impact in our communities. We are committed to ongoing professional development and celebrate the unique perspectives that each team member brings to the table.

Employee ownership is available to all Dillon team members, and over 60% of our employees’ own shares in Dillon. Through employee ownership, we return the financial benefit created by our project work to the very people who created that value. Because we are an employee-owned firm, your voice will be an essential part of our shared success.

Responsibilities

  • Stay hands-on: build proofs of concept and reference implementations, pair with developers on complex problems, and contribute to code reviews and technical spec reviews.
  • Own integration points between ERP and legacy systems, front-end, back-end, and satellite systems; identify and flag solution delivery risks early.
  • Establish and maintain the reference architecture for our external-facing applications, including API design, integration patterns, and non-functional requirements.
  • Set the architectural direction for AI-enabled solutions: define the patterns, guardrails, and evaluation standards for how AI capabilities are integrated into our applications and automation portfolio.
  • Champion AI-assisted development across the team, establishing how coding assistants and agentic tools fit into our engineering practices, code review standards, and definition of done.
  • Apply organizational standards and architectural principles to define infrastructure non-functional requirements and ensure adherence to guidelines.
  • Act as the focal point for resolving complex infrastructure and development issues through high-quality, pragmatic design.
  • Produce clear architecture artifacts: diagrams, decision records, and target/transition-state plans that developers can build from.
  • Collaborate with technology teams, business leaders, sponsors, and stakeholders to develop solution designs and technology roadmaps.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve organizational efficiency; introduce new patterns and technologies that improve business value and align with modern ways of working.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, with a preference for simplicity and a willingness to challenge technical constraints through iterative approaches.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven expertise with architecture modeling frameworks and languages (e.g., UML), along with a comprehensive understanding of disciplines spanning Business, Data (Information), Application, Technology, and Security.
  • Deep expertise in .NET, SQL, and relational database systems such as Microsoft SQL Server or MySQL.
  • Proficiency across a wide array of integration and automation technologies, including APIs, ETL, RPA, workflow automation, business rules engines, and low-code platforms.
  • Familiarity with major cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP), with a preference for Azure experience; relevant certifications are considered a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence technical decisions across multiple teams while collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders and external vendors.

Experience

  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in software engineering and solution architecture, featuring a sustained commitment to hands-on delivery and a strong passion for both designing and building systems.
  • Experience supporting an ERP or other enterprise system initiative through implementation, upgrade, or major integration, with some exposure to data migration or customization decisions.
  • Previous professional experience within complex, regulated, or multi-stakeholder environments is an asset.

Compensation

$110,000 – $130,000

Dillon is including the salary range that we in good faith believe may offer for this position. It will be dependent on the successful applicant's education, experience, and skills, in addition to internal equity and geographic region. Dillon reserves the right to pay outside of the posted range, contingent on factors unrelated to an applicant's gender or other status protected by provincial and/or federal law.

In addition to a competitive base salary, Dillon offers:

  • Flexible work hours and hybrid work arrangement options to help balance the competing demands of work and personal life
  • Employee share purchase plan
    • Dillon is 100% employee-owned, and share ownership is open to all employees. Our annual share dividends have historically outperformed the market average.
  • Dillon’s Overtime Directive
    • This Management Directive establishes a firm-wide 40-hour weekly overtime threshold, after which premium pay applies, ensuring consistent and fair compensation across all Canadian offices.
  • Competitive benefits package, including:
    • Comprehensive health benefits
    • Generous retirement savings plan with employer matching up to 5.5%
    • Student loan repayment assistance
    • Wellness allowance and enhanced mental health benefits
    • Ample paid vacation
    • Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP)
    • Goodlife Fitness Corporate Membership rates

Health & Safety at Dillon

Prospective employees are expected to fully align with Dillon's core commitment to Health & Safety. This includes active, ongoing engagement with our Health & Safety processes and platform, and the active, ongoing identification and reporting of health and safety hazards.

Dillon is committed to employment equity and an inclusive, diverse workplace where opportunities are based on skills and abilities. If you require accommodation during the interview process, please let us know.

Technology enablement and the use of AI at Dillon

Please be advised that Dillon uses AI-assisted tools to support aspects of our recruitment process to increase efficiency and fairness. While AI supports the process, all hiring decisions are made by our human recruiting team. By applying, you acknowledge and consent to this use.
