Join CPKC, North America’s first transnational railroad connecting the U.S, Canada, and Mexico, where your career drives progress and safety is paramount. This role can be located in Calgary, AB or Toronto, ON. We connect communities, fuel economic growth, and provide meaningful work in a culture that values diversity, accountability, and pride. With opportunities for training, development, and advancement, you’re not just building a career—you’re part of something bigger. Together, we move goods, connect people, and create lasting change. Your future starts here.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Geotechnical Engineering Field Manager leads the planning, inspection, design, and execution of complex geotechnical projects to address and resolve issues impacting railway infrastructure. Serving as a key technical expert, the manager ensures all field operations adhere to stringent safety standards and regulatory requirements while supporting CPKC’s strategic goals. This role collaborates with cross-functional teams, leverages advanced engineering practices, and provides guidance to optimize project delivery and maintain the reliability and safety of railway operations.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Deliver real-time, system-wide emergency response and support for geohazard incidents—including slope/roadbed failures, debris flow/washouts—by providing engineered, practical solutions to promptly restore operations

  • Travel up to 50% across the CPKC network in Canada and the U.S. to oversee critical geotechnical activities and responses

  • Plan, coordinate, manage, and actively participate in routine follow-up field inspections, as well as annual system-wide rock slope assessments

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of comprehensive system-wide tunnel inspections

  • Manage contracts related to soil stabilization and rock slope stabilization, serving as the principal CPKC technical expert for these projects

  • Contribute to the development of both single-year and multi-year budget proposals for geohazard management, covering risks such as soil/rock slope, tunnel, and debris hazards

  • Perform inspections to collect information and verify contractual requirements for Capital or Special Maintenance Authority (SMA) projects

  • Act as CPKC’s internal geotechnical expert to complete reviews and provide advice to internal stakeholders

  • Provide on-call support and emergency response to support 24/7 operations

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Civil Engineering

  • Professional Engineering designation, P.Eng. for Canada or P.E for U.S

  • Geological knowledge of design and execution in the field

  • Valid driver's license

  • Valid passport with ability to travel to U.S./CAN without restrictions

  • Minimum of 8 years of geotechnical or geological engineering experience

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook

  • Proven track record in managing incident response operations

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver engaging presentations

  • Self-starter, motivated, adaptable, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks effectively

WHAT CPKC HAS TO OFFER:

  • Flexible and competitive benefits package

  • Competitive company pension and/or retirement plans

  • Employee share purchase plan

  • Performance incentive plan

  • Annual fitness subsidy

  • Part-time studies program
