Responsibilities

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage internal Legal and broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Champions a risk awareness culture and ensures that legal and reputational risks are identified and managed within Tangerine Bank’s risk framework.
  • Ensures timely action is taken to effectively manage and mitigate legal and regulatory risks, including prompt escalation of issues as per established processes to meet the Bank’s objectives.
  • Understands how the Bank's risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day‑to‑day activities, advice and decisions and provides legal advice with an awareness of the need to minimize reputational, legal and regulatory risk.
  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of my respective areas in accordance with Tangerine’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day‑to‑day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
  • Champions a high‑performance environment and contributes to an inclusive work environment.
  • Represents Tangerine Bank at select meetings or on committees with government, public and private organisations; researches and prepares submissions to government bodies on legislation and other issues affecting the organisation.
  • Directs the activity of outside counsel, supervises the work of outside counsel and supporting staff including appraising work performance and retaining outside counsel under Legal policies and reviewing invoices.
  • Works closely with Compliance to handle regulatory compliance issues, analyse and interpret banking regulations, and review/revise reports that are being submitted to the FCAC, and respond to other regulatory requests.
  • Participates in making recommendations on the course of action to be taken during litigation and regulatory matters with advice and support from internal and/or external counsel.
  • Provides legal analysis, documentation, negotiation, preparation, review, research and advice and counsel to Tangerine Bank and its business lines on matters of above average complexity in the development and improvement of both new and existing programmes, products and services, policies and procedures.
  • Researches legal issues of substantial complexity on a national or regional basis and researches proposed federal and provincial legislation to evaluate impact on Tangerine Bank; may initiate the research of more junior counsel or articling students or outside counsel; informs management on developing legal trends and their impact and recommends courses of action; creates and maintains practices and procedures and related precedents within the Legal Department that can be leveraged by Legal and/or for use by business line partners as appropriate.
  • Provides counsel and legal support on issues concerning provincial consumer protection legislations, Bank Act, Payments Canada rules, provincial consumer reporting legislations and e‑commerce laws.
  • Drafts, reviews and revises a wide variety of customer‑facing documents and materials such as retail banking agreements, terms and conditions, marketing, advertisements, press releases and articles.
  • Responds to inquiries made by other customer‑facing departments that handle customer complaints and inquiries such as Ask Operations, Escalated Customer Concerns Office, Customer Complaints Appeals Office and Corporate Communications.
  • Negotiates, drafts and revises the Bank’s agreement with payment networks and other third‑party payment/money transfer service providers.
  • Provides practical and risk‑based legal advice and guidance to retail banking business and other functions within the Bank such as Global Sanctions, AML, Fraud, Marketing and Privacy.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of a recognised law school with 8-10 years or more of significant practical in‑house or private practice experience.
  • Membership in the Law Society of one of the provinces of Canada.
  • Strong knowledge, expertise and experience in banking and payment industries including payments, credit cards, unsecured lending and retail banking. Familiarity with small business banking is an asset.
  • The position requires a high degree of analytical, human relations and communications skills, and a thorough knowledge of specialised areas of law.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills.
  • Sophisticated drafting and writing skills.
